Tottenham legend and former England Tells Tan

Thu Apr 02, 2026 9:44 am

Tottenham legend and former England international Chris Waddle has told Vincent Tan that Cardiff City must spend big this summer and sign at least five or six new players if they want to finish above Swansea City and challenge at the top next season.

With the Bluebirds closing in on an immediate return to the Championship, the former England star believes promotion alone will not be enough unless serious investment follows.

But Waddle says the squad that gets them up will not be strong enough for what comes next.

Waddle :

“It all depends on what Cardiff spend,” the 65-year-old.

“Wrexham have bought a lot of players to get into the position they are in. Birmingham City didn’t buy as many, or didn’t buy the right players, and it has cost them.”

“Everybody thought Birmingham would be knocking on the door for automatic promotion but they didn’t buy the number 10 they needed and it has set them back massively.

“If Swansea have had a good second half of the season, and they’ve been very hard to beat, to finish this year strongly then Cardiff will need to bring players in. That team coming out of League One will not be strong enough.

“Going from League One into the Championship is like going into the Premier League from the Championship. It’s very hard unless you bring in five or six new players.”

ANNIS

He has to sell or start all over again,
but it's dalman who seems to be the sticking point, milking Tan and cardiff city sat on his yacht in Monaco .
Serious questions need to be asked now, not waiting till the season has finished .

Are you staying or selling we do not want to be limping into the championship getting thrashed every week stuck at the bottom all season like under Riza ,my nerves could not do another shite season like that again.

Waddle is correct but only stating the obvious.

As i can't see the source, why is Chris Waddle even commenting on Cardiff? do not see the connection, or was he asked about league one teams coming up or something?

How many minutes has he watched us play since last August? Gets my goat these pundits who watch a few clips on the goggle and pronounce their wondrous wisdom.
I've been supporting since 1959, and let me tell Mr Twaddle, this has been one of my favourite seasons ever, watching the kids, our kids, play football.Yes we're having a bit of a wobble, but it's our wobble and our kids along with BBM will sort it.This season has been a revelation for me, with someone who has shown faith and commitment towards our young lads, and been repaid in spades.
I won't even comment on the Hoddle/Waddle malarky, nuff said.
