Favourite Away Grounds / Memories

Fri Mar 27, 2026 11:12 pm

My first ever away game was in the early 90s

Trips to places like Scarborough, Scunthorpe and Darlington amongst them, none of which are even in the Football League anymore sadly

Anyway, for me I always enjoyed going to

Mansfield, Pub right by the ground, always a lively welcome from the locals, last day of the season one was the best when we went up

Jacks away on the first ever bubble trip in 1996

Any London Club, always enjoy a London away day

The two Bristol Clubs (when we win)

Torquay/Exeter/Plymouth, can’t get a ticket now but back in the day could just turn up

Reading was always a good one, Dubery Dubery your a grass probably the best, older lads will have memories of Elm Park no doubt's

Be great to hear some stories of peoples favourite personal away days and stories and apologies of this has already been done

My first ever away ground was 1978/79 Season West Ham v Cardiff City , loved the atmosphere and it was intimidating beyond. 800 Cardiff fans travelled and it was carnage by West Ham Fans.

Favourite Ground will always be “ NINIAN PARK “ :bluebird: :bluebird: it meant so
Much to me from 1972 -2009 :bluebird: :bluebird:

My Daughter Alexandra with our seats from Section A Grandstand and a Bob Bank Barrier and our garden was from the pitch :bluebird: :bluebird:

I like going away in 80s,most teams had a welcoming party waiting for you, especially night games.enjoyde the London away days, bristol city, wolves i always dreaded, good days but long gone now.
I like the bench pic Annis, that has more space than some plastic seats.

The old wolves ground moliniux got in the wrong pub there once,
and gay meadow, the old shrewsbury ground could get tasty i think is was a welsh Cup or fa Cup fighting on some bridge near the station and getting pelted with stones .
Also every time the ball went over the away end into the river there was a guy in a boat retrieving the balls.

Always enjoy going to see us play at Villa Park. Proper old school ground with great noise.

Monty,I remember the old gay meadow ground,I'm sure they had a chap in a boat waiting to return the ball if it went out of the ground and landed in the river.

Used to love going to the Manor Ground at Oxford, especially in the 70's on the football specials. We always took loads and before the police got wise to it we would "take their end"  . Years later we would be stuck on the open end and I got soaked on a number of occasions. But great days.

Depending on who was in the boat some would throw it back over but then health and safety got involved and you could hit someone on the head so that stopped.
I had an old friend who was a shrews fan, said they had a few run ins with the welsh clubs near the jail ,
you crossed over an enclosed rail bridge they would wait the other side but you never new how many were there till you came out the other side for the rail station .
There was no plastic chair throwing in the 70s it was fighting proper.

Thanks Bob,

They are the original seats from the 1970’s.

I spent the last 10 yrs sitting on them with my family.

Before that the Bob Bank.

Plenty of space

I did notice at oakwell, the turnstiles were the old heavy duty ones, even the floodlights were vintage!! Remember people use to climb them back in the day, oakwell still has broken glass stuck in cement on top of the walls.you rarely see that nowadays.

Might have been 78, league cup game in August? I was home on leave from the RN, caught a supporters coach from Ninian Park , only two if I remember. Thought there wouldn't be many City down there, mistaken. Pulled up at the ground and had a couple of hours B4 kick off, we all went looking for a pub. I had tagged on with a group of lads from Sandfields, and as we walked through streets there were local out on front doors with dogs , and I swear some had hammers? We were all thinks what's gone off, then passed a news paper shop with outside A frames, '100 + Cardiff fans in cells after a night of mayhem'.

Seems half of S, Wales had taken a holiday there and it had gone off. Any way we eventually found a bar that ley us in, and the Sandfield lads seemed ok to stay there the whole evening, but eventually we got to the ground, paid to go in, City were in 3 sides. Game itself a 1-1 I think. But at the end City went on the pitch, then police came on, and there was a stampede off down a narrow street, that was crazy, people running over cars, bricks being launched. Remember one lad saying we need to get away and try and find a pub, as our coach driver had already told us he wasn't leaving until 11pm. Which we did, and ended up in a bar (Gay), the only one that would let us in, but two younger lads had gone ahead to see if any others would let us in. Trouble was they encountered a group of Chelsea, and got a kicking. Of course when they came back to us, it was pints down and go looking for he Chelsea. Found them, and all I will say was that was the first time I ever saw a 'Calling card' put of on of one of the Chelsea. Eventful night, was over. Got back to the ground where the coaches were souposed to be - gone. Police had moved them on, but with most of the occupants in the car park, and pissed off, got them turned round, Eventually got back to Cardiff at 3/4am - parents were in Rhoose at the time, no transport there so I hiched. Got a lift at Ely round about, dropped off edge of Barry, and another 3 mile walk back. Great day out :bluescarf:

And weirdly Hereford, Shrewsbury and Chester hate each other (as well as Wrexham).

Occasionally go to Hereford if we're not playing because it's close and know a few Hereford fans. Edgar Street is a great ground but their club have fallen down the pyramid.

I used to run a bus to a lot of away games in the 70's from Pontycymer picking up boys on the way in the Bridgend area. I went to a lot of scary grounds during that time but the one that stands out is the West Ham game that Annis pointed out earlier. We drew with West Ham 1-1[ Tony Evans scored] and i dont think i watched the game after that. West Ham come from all around the ground at us !! !!! The " chicken run " after the game was carnage !! West ham had the better of us that day. I drove a transit van there with lads in the back and parked by the Cardiff coaches. When we got back to the coaches, i think every window was put in by West Ham. There wasnt a mark on the transit van thank God as i told the van hire company i was moving some furniture that weekend. We had a police escort from the ground and West Ham were following us in cars throwing stones at all the coaches. Cardiff fams were taking the broken glass out of the windows and throwing it back at them . This was still happening as we passed the Houses of Parliament !!! It suprises me that Birmingham doesnt get a mention here as they were a tasty mob also.
