What next for Bellamy and Wales after World Cup agony?

Fri Mar 27, 2026 3:08 pm

It will take some time for Craig Bellamy and his Wales players to get over the agony of missing out on World Cup qualification.

Has cost the FAW millions by not qualifying. I blame Bellamy for this loss, his subs were unfathomable and just put us on the back foot. Can't expect to win an international football match when you don't use your best players.

I'm doubtful about Bellamy's ability to take us forward based on last night's showing.

100% agree - great options left on the bench and nobody fresh on to take a penalty when some of those still on the pitch were out on their feet. A bizarre second half all round from Bellamy.

Bellamy has been a good coach for us. We've over performed considering the quality in the squad. No real stars since Bale and Ramsey. Only Wilson and Nico Williams are very good premier League players the rest are a mix of bottom end prem and championship players. Hopefully lessons will be learned you can't replace Dan James and Brooks with Cullen and Mark Harris that's too big a drop in quality. As disappointing as Thursday was getting past Italy was a massive ask anyway. Qualifying for the Euros is easier than the World Cup and from what we've shown Bellamy is the man for the job

It’s not actually any easier unless two of the four home nations qualify automatically as hosts. If that doesn’t happen, it’s effectively the same as World Cup qualifying — it just comes down to the two best-placed teams.
So if England qualify, you’re then competing with Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland for the remaining spots based purely on performance. That’s not really any easier in practice.

He got it massively wrong on Thursday but I don't expect him to leave the job.

Good news is we're practically guaranteed to be in the Euros as long as we have a half decent qualifying campaign due to the situation with us being co-hosts.

He’s being heavily touted for the Celtic job and bookies have shortened the odds.

Who, Bellamy?

Why would he want to go to a 2nd rate club in a 3rd rate league?

He's said he doesn't want the day to day hassles of managing a league team more than once, even in a tin pot league.

WTf is wrong with you. I’m Scottish, I read Scottish papers, I passed the information on. Personally I couldn’t give a flying one where he goes or doesn’t go.

Nothing wrong with me, you posted, I replied, that's generally how forums work.

Craig Bellamy has underlined his commitment to staying on as Wales head coach, describing it as the best job in the world.

Wales missed out on World Cup qualification in agonising fashion last Thursday, losing their play-off semi-final to Bosnia-Herzegovina on penalties.

Bellamy, who was appointed in July 2024, is contracted until 2028 but has been linked with clubs including Celtic.

However, the 46-year-old has distanced himself from such speculation and wants to lead Wales at Euro 2028, which they will co-host with England, Scotland and the Republic of Ireland.

"The heartbreak is actually more than I anticipated, but the energy to refocus and go again is definitely still there," said Bellamy.

"I really enjoy this. We'll talk more after it [Tuesday's friendly against Northern Ireland] probably because my mind is just so focused on the present moment. But it's the best role in the world.

"Nothing will ever compare to this so why would I want to wish it away? I've really enjoyed doing this and I still do."
