Interesting development in England today as Leeds United call for football chants about historical cases of child abuse to be considered a hate crime and be punishable by law

The club’s owners, who have links with the consortium that took over Rangers in the summer, say the “disgraceful” chants “should not be happening” and are an insult to the victims of abuse.

It comes after Leeds fans were targeted by Jimmy Saville chants due to the infamous monster’s links to the Yorkshire city.

The board, which includes 49ers group and former Rangers vice-chair Paarag Marathe, have lobbied to have the chants banned by law.

Leeds United said in a statement: “Leeds United Football Club have lobbied and would be fully supportive of Jimmy Savile chants being classed as tragedy chanting and a hate crime.

“The club’s supporters are subjected to these sickening taunts at every match by opposition fans, which should not be happening in today’s game and are a disgrace to the victims of Jimmy Savile’s abuse. Equally, the club disapproves of retaliatory chants from our own supporters.

“The club is pleased this is finally being brought to the forefront by the media and hope that this can be the first step in helping to eradicate these chants, with support of the relevant governing bodies.”

Goes without saying that Rangers fans are also prone to indulging in similar chants - so will the 49ers group be ready to take such a hard stance north of the border ?

I must admit I do cringe when I hear the Lizzie in a box, about Liam Cullan mother and the other song about Jacks, few years back it was Harold Shipman but that has stopped :bluebird:

Agree don’t mind Swansea slums but some of the others go over the top I think.

There’ll likely be a few fellow bluebirds next to you in that stadium who will have had to have gone through that in life so I don’t think it’s particularly funny

Or chants about people’s mothers, not very funny when the jacks sing about Ollie Tanner’s either

The Arsene Wenger chant was particularly offensive.

Like most clubs I suppose we have a number of brain dead morons who think such chants are funny.
