Any advice much appreciated

Porto is a great city, good value for money, with very reasonably priced food and drink.
I would recommend getting a 3 day pass for all public transport for only 15€ .You can get it at the tourist office in the airport arrivals hall.
There are lots of sports bars which show football. I would recommend Guidolense Football Club bar, which is up by the main bridge with great views overlooking the Douro River. It serves good food as well.

When Wales played Gibraltar in Faro, no alcohol in or around the ground.
