Are real fans falling out of love with the Premier League?

Tue Jan 20, 2026 2:00 pm

I know ultimately we want Cardiff back in the EPL but whats people’s thoughts on what it’s become.l?

Sterile atmospheres, half n half scarves, flat soulless modern stadia, lacking in character and history. Teams like Man City, Utd, Liverpool and Arsenal have become tourist teams.

I hated every second of the Premier League. This season is the happiest I’ve been for years. Money has ruined football.

I very rarely watch it tbh, did watch the Sunderland v Newcastle game a few weeks back but don't really bother anymore. 90% of the players are mercenaries who aren't interested in the club or fans and the football isnt that exciting. :bluebird:

I don't watch it really unless I happen to be Infront of a TV when match of the day comes on. Although I'll tune in for football league highlights that's about it. Detest the premier league with a passion, full of actors and over paid fannys, VAR nonsense and if a manager loses a game there all taking like sky sports news or the commentary team the spitting idiot caraghter or neville after a month in a job to sack them and how there under pressure. Kills me.

Even the chants are all the same but a word changed in then to suit the tourist team they are watching but then again all football chants are today 80 percent of the time it's the same shit different word to suit them in every ground.

If there's match of the day on you could keep the same 22 on the pitch between both sides and just change two sides of 11 shirts to a different colour and design, Same boring tappy style, same boring crap it's like groundhog day watching it in my opinion.

And VAR, can’t believe I didn’t mention it. Turns football into a passionless, clinical game. If it were ever introduced in the EFL I’d seriously consider not watching.

Imagine celebrating Bagans winner and then it being called back for a toe offside in the build up. Rubbish

This season has been the most fun I've had in years, it was a struggle to even get to games the last few seasons but this season I look forward to going every game home and away and away games especially you can just feel how much more everyone is enjoying it the vibe is so much more jubilant, so bollocks to the Premier league as far as I'm concerned for now

Have not bothered at all really since we were there last i am still watching championship games though but always more interested in which division we are in,
just like lincoln v burton this thursday nightfall watch with interest.

Re: Are real fans falling out of love with the Premier Leagu

I watch it but it's not as exciting to watch as it was.

Because so much money is at stake, there are teams that seem scared to play attacking football. Especially in the matches between two big teams.

You still get the odd game where it's a great watch, like Newcastle v Leeds the other day.

But I have always preferred watching the EFL, so much better to watch.

Like others, have enjoyed watching us this season and our style. It's been enjoyable.

But as I said on another thread, the Premier League is still the best top tier league in the world in my opinion but unfortunately comes at a price.

Would say you're right about the lack of real fans at the top clubs. But that's been the case for a while, Roy Keane used to call them the prawn sandwich brigade.

But away from the top clubs, the majority are still real fans I think.

For me VAR has on the whole ruined it for me. You're never really sure if its actually a goal or whether someone's toe is offside.
It's ruined the spontaneity of the game. That incident with Man city and Newcastle the other day was a complete joke. 5 half mins to sort it out.
The last round of the FA Cup was a breath of fresh air with no VAR.
So many of the players are just so entitled and money centric.
Rolling around on the floor with slightest touch.....embarrassing

We need the old Grange back. This ground is dead, like all grounds that are all-seaters. Best atmosphere I’ve seen this season was at Macclesfield, and I only get excited watching the Big Match.

Yep. I reckon that if we had standing back it would go a long way to improving the atmosphere

This is a great question and alot of people are saying the same , I have mates who go every week to their clubs in the premier leugue and they say they hate it , and that VAR has ruined the excitement.
Obviously the money and all the acting has a big part to play in the boring shit .
I am loving this leugue one football it’s been brilliant most games

We have to factor in we have been top for the best part of the season so far which helps the feel good imagine if we were near the bottom of this division with 10,000 turning up to watch.

I prefer the championship to the Premier league

It's more unpredictable and competitive,
Plus no VAR(for now)

This is a fair point. However it does feel like there's been a change of football philosophy at the club

Obviously being in the Premier League (edited from Premiership) has its pro's and cons.

For myself, personally, I didn't like the experience for a number of reasons.

Firstly, both times we were promoted, we failed to build a squad of players capable of competing to the level required to remain there. Without new owners and a massive investment, I cannot see this changing if ever we returned to the Premier League (edited from Premiership)

It became rather humiliating leaving the ground with poor results and struggling at the bottom end of the table.

Secondly, many of our extra crowd attendance were only there to see the opersition and were not proper Cardiff fans.

Thirdly, if we had remained in the Premiership, I hate to think how much tickets would cost by now. At least the club has been fair with attendance prices in the Championship and League one.

Fourthly, parking was a nightmare.

Finally, VAR has spoiled the game to a certain extent as when a team gets the ball in the net, the goal is frequently disallowed.
I much prefer the matches we watch without VAR.

This season has highlighted how much I dont enjoy the prem.
Caveat with not wanting to be L1 because the quality isnt as good. But we have had proper fans come along. Played honest hard working sides. Even the ones that park the bus have worked hard. For me the Championship is great. Anyone can beat anyone and the quality of player is that much higher than it is now. Its like league 1 with better quality. The prem is just dull with many club having a fan base totally disconnected from any local loyalties. It showed that when we were there, people would come from the surrounding area to sit in the away end.

Me too.

I love the championship and if we get promoted this season it will feel better than when we got promoted to the prem.

Apparently, end of last weeks' round of games meant the Premier League season to-date has produced the same amount of 0-0 draws as the whole of last seasons.

Talksport had a section on it, and they covered things already mentioned like VAR; but also stated (which some have on here/at our level) that players are programmed & robotic in their patterns of play and there are less mavericks in teams at the moment as 'the game' seems to have managed them out. They also covered that there seems to be less desire as even 19 year olds are multi-millionaires.

A good take from a caller was that you either give no points for a 0-0, or half a point; promoting to go and actually get a goal. Unlikely, but a good take which I'd support. I hate a 0-0. A score-draw can be quality entertainment.

I watch very little of the Prem and Champions League at the moment. I dabble in the Championship then try to keep my eye on L1. I watch some of the Spanish league, mainly due to the late Sunday slots.

Interesting views on VAR, they’ve got it in Scotland and it’s not reduced controversy and as has been said, it kills everything. Scared to celebrate a goal incase it’s chopped off. Supporting a football team used to be about community and geography, now it’s about who wins the Premier League, when children are at an impressionable age.

4points for a win, 2 for a score draw, 1 for a 0-0 ?

Interestingly, regardless of the abuse in the Premier League, apparently they have something like 78% of decisions (cant remember the exact figure) correct and statistically improved decision making as a result. So objectively, it is working.

However, I do agree with you and for the 22% of incorrect decisions, it's very noisy and impacting big game moments.

I hate it. I'd love to see that change where, like tennis for example, the manager can use it as a 'challenge' for up to 3 times in a game. Going back through phases to find issue; usually ends in finding an issue.

IFAB are now likely to increase VAR usage so it includes second yellow cards and corners.

Will make it even worse.

Further proof that VAR isn't going anywhere and I wouldn't be surprised to see it in the Championship soon.

Never watch it, tbh I'm enjoying the football being served up this season in league 1 by our youngsters and some not so young as well.
After what seems a lifetime we've been served some dross football but it's so refreshing this season and I always look forward to the next game.
They can keep their Prem.

Its pretty formulaic at the moment. I think Pep ball has run its course, teams have defences for it all now. Analysts are cheap and players just do what they are told. I would if you pay me £4 mill a year.

I can't wait to see 442 big man little man to be invented by Carlos Kickabout to exploit all that space left behind with the high pressers.
