OFFICIAL: TRANSFER EMBARGO LIFTED

Fri Jan 16, 2026 1:28 pm

Cardiff City transfer ban lifted as green light given to announce signing
Glen Williams

Cardiff City’s transfer embargo has been lifted, clearing the way for the club to complete the signing of Everton goalkeeper Harry Tyrer, WalesOnline understands.

The Bluebirds had been operating under an EFL-imposed embargo after failing to submit their accounts by the required deadline, a situation which temporarily stalled their ability to register new players despite ongoing recruitment work behind the scenes.

That development paves the way for the signing of 24-year-old Tyrer from Everton, with the goalkeeper having already been at Cardiff on Tuesday to undergo a medical. The move had been agreed in principle earlier this week but could not be finalised while the embargo remained in place.

As revealed exclusively by WalesOnline, Tyrer has been a priority target for head coach Brian Barry-Murphy, who has been keen to bolster his goalkeeping options after the squad was left thin between the posts.

Cardiff currently have Nathan Trott and Matt Turner as senior goalkeepers, with Jak Alnwick having left for Huddersfield Town and Ethan Horvath due to leave this month, too. Academy prospects Jake Dennis and Ewen Griffiths both set to head out on loan.

Barry-Murphy has repeatedly stressed the importance of having at least three goalkeepers available due to the club’s recruitment restrictions.

Speaking earlier this week, Barry-Murphy played down concerns over the embargo itself, insisting it had little impact on his day-to-day focus.

My first notice of it was on Saturday morning,” he said. “It takes up no time in my mind. It will be sorted whenever it’s sorted.

The City boss also made clear the need to act quickly in the transfer market, particularly in the goalkeeping department. Sign up to our daily Bluebirds newsletter here.

We need a goalkeeper, definitely,” he added. “We want a goalkeeper straight away.”

Tyrer, who has spent time on loan away from Everton in recent seasons, is expected to provide competition and cover as Cardiff look to stabilise their squad heading into a crucial period of the campaign.

Good news.

Would expect Tyrer to be announced shortly. Then would like to see a LB and a winger/striker.

"My first notice was on Saturday morning"

Probably read about it on this messageboard like the rest of us.

Heaven forbid that those running the club should keep the manager up to date with matters which could affect the club's transfer plans.

It was a joke Monty. Appreciate you murdering it repeatedly though.

Glad Sven got it, or I'd have hung up my keyboard.

Monty doesn’t do ‘jokes’; not where he means them to be anyway! ;) :laughing6:

I saw it; and I laughed because I recall a time when the old ‘Howells School’ rumours had John Oster’s kids on the school bus run to Llandaff! :laughing6: :ayatollah:

Ain’t that the truth!

I played competitively until I was 50 Chris so I think we should take a punt on this guy.

Well we got a goalkeeper in, ive no idea who he is but fits BBM style I guess. Let's hope we get atleast 3 outfield players in we all know where we need players in positions better or the same over the coming months for many reasons :bluescarf:
