BLUEBIRDS CLOSE IN ON SURPRISE FIRST SIGNING

Cardiff City close in on deal for Everton player with medical today
Glen Williams

Cardiff are currently under a transfer embargo, however as of Tuesday morning they remain hopeful that the accounts will be submitted and ratified in order for that to be lifted by the end of the week.

As far as Cardiff are concerned, it's business as usual, however no deal can be announced until the embargo is lifted.

The Bluebirds have revamped the goalkeeping department this season, with Brian Barry-Murphy allowing Jak Alnwick to leave, joining Huddersfield Town, with Ethan Horvath also understood to be surplus to requirements. Sign up to our Cardiff City WhatsApp channel here.

They were keen to do a deal ahead of the campaign, however both Cardiff and Everton's goalkeeping situations proved sticking points, with Tyrer on the bench for the opening Premier League game against Leeds United.

Barry-Murphy has placed an emphasis on goalkeepers being comfortable on the ball, as showcased by Trott this season before his error led to Leyton Orient's opener at the weekend.

It is understood that is a big strength of Tyrer's, too, along with his shot-stopping skills.

The Liverpudlian never made his first-team debut for Everton and at 24 feels it is the right time to start his career in earnest away from the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Tyrer already has experience at League One level, having been the first-choice 'keeper for Blackpool last season and was in the top third in relation to saves and save percentage compared to his contemporaries across the campaign.

He has also had non-League loans with Chesterfield and Chester.

Exactly what isn't needed; proven by a handful of games with no keeper on the bench. I see Turner as a solid #2 and Trott is the greatest goalkeeper to ever walk a pitch.

Left back, striker or a goal-scoring midfielder please.

I feel this is a waste of our limited resources

I’m not so sure. We have two keepers; one superb and one a very good ‘back up

Who/what is beyond those should an injury occur?

Nathan Trott had a spell out recently, so we had no keeper on the bench, which left Perry Ng as our ‘emergency’ back up. Not great for a team intent on pushing on for promotion!

Trust in BBM. He knows what/who he wants! :ayatollah:

Will always welcome new signings.

Always good to have three goalkeepers, will stop the situation of having no GK on the bench when one of them is injured.

Sounds like this lad is good with his feet too, which is crucial to the way we play.

Welcome to the club.

Is it permanent or a loan?

Thanks Roger, should be a decent investment for the future too then.

Could be that Turner had had an offer as a first team keeper. Wouldn’t begrudge him that at all.

Re: BLUEBIRDS CLOSE IN ON SURPRISE FIRST SIGNING

Tue Jan 13, 2026 10:25 am

It does seem weird we are after a GK when really all I think we need is a LB, ST and maybe CM/CAM this window.

There have been reports in the past of the club signing players they want rather than the manager too

However, if BBM wants this guy then I'll support the signing all the way

What I will say though and I said this earlier in the season, is does this mean Trott wont be signed in the summer? I know we have an option to buy but with the cost cutting the last few seasons (and from a business point of view) I can see the club trying to save money and not shell out the fee for Trott as we'll have this guy. Hope I am wrong :?:

Perhaps .Murphy things trott will be trotting off at the end of the season elsewhere.

Well Monty it’s about wages and costs:

Tyrer aged 24 has actually Never played for Everton

The Hierarchy have got Rid of both our first team goalies to reduce wages.

Trott will be gone come May.

F.ck sake are we still cost cutting we got shot of about 18 end of last season about 5 this season how low do we have to go ,been frank a keeper is probably the last position we are struggling in ,but then again we are all like .mushrooms in the dark not knowing what is going on up above ,sala case, hopes for this season we have heard nothing .

Doubt it. There's an agreement in place to sign Trott if we go up.

This is bringing in an extra goalkeeper because we currently only have two first team goalkeepers.

Trott has a obligation to buy if promoted

It’s an interesting one, Ned. We clearly need another keeper, but it doesn’t mean either of the existing two will be gone come the summer. We have an agreement on Trott, promotion provided, and Turner is on a contract

BBM is ‘improving’ his squad, so why does this (currently potential) signing have to be a negative!? :?

Re: BLUEBIRDS CLOSE IN ON SURPRISE FIRST SIGNING

With two keepers leaving, a third was needed as back up. Not a massive priority in my opinion but it is needed. As long as it doesn't affect us signing in different areas then this is a positive.

LB next please :ayatollah:

Trott is on loan and will go back next year and be sold.

If we are promoted we have to buy him. I’m not sure how us signing a new keeper is a negative thing. BBM obviously thinks we need one for whatever reason that may be.

Totally agree Chris.

Seems we tried to sign this player in the summer after we signed Trott, so this signing doesn't impact Trott's potential move in the summer in any way.

That just sums it up nicely then, Ned! Potential positive signing alert! :ayatollah:

We might have first dibs to buy trott, but Tan buys not murphy, perhaps murphy is covering his back if Tan says no.

So by that reckoning, the club would have sent Trott back once the Tryer deal had been completed in the summer?

The club would be mad (and I know where you’ll go with this!) not to sign Trott, if the criteria is met, as he would be an absolute bargain at the agreed price; and given he is yet to reach his peak (early 30’s for a keeper) his value would only rise substantially working at an EFL club! :ayatollah:

Then why have there been no reports of that and no sign of Trott going?

It's pretty obvious. We tried to sign Harry Tyrer in the summer after Trott came in. The plan was for Trott, Tyrer and Turner to be our goalkeepers.

Everton wouldn't let Tyrer go at the time so we decided to wait until now.

This has absolutely zero bearing on Trott's future.

I'm pleased we're adding an additional goalkeeper.

I think some people want it to be right!

Personally, I’m heartened by Ned’s assertion that this deal was attempted in the summer, when Nathan Trott and Matt Turner were already here!

Matt Turner has done very well when deputising, but we need at least three decent keepers going forward, and Nathan Trott would be the first player who isn’t tied to a contract already, that BBM would want to have here next season!

To be fair Chris, I'm going off what people have said on social media so don't have any knowledge of that myself. But these people don't normally make stuff up.

I certainly don't see any evidence that Trott is going anywhere or anything to suggest that we won't sign him in the summer (promotion depending).

Not having a keeper on the bench always makes me nervous so for me this can be nothing but a good thing. If it was about cost cutting wouldn't it be cheaper to not sign him ?
