Manchester United decide against re-appointing Ole

Mon Jan 12, 2026 5:58 pm

Manchester United are set to appoint former player Michael Carrick as their interim manager until the end of the season. He previously had a short stint as caretaker manager and also managed Middlesbrough.

Another former player and former manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, was also in discussions with the club but the hierarchy have decided against him taking the job again.

Darren Fletcher, who has taken charge of the club's last two games since the sacking of Ruben Amorim, is expected to be part of the First Team coaching setup.

It's a strange situation at that club at the moment. They seem to have sacked Amorim without having any idea what to do next.

That's lead them to have a situation where they had an interim manager in Fletcher for two games, a new interim manager until the end of the season and then a permanent manager in the summer.

But I think they've probably gone with the right interim.

I like Ole. Met him several times when he was our manager and he was one of the friendliest people you'll meet. Told it's not an act with him, he's just a decent person. But he was a dreadful manager for us.

Did alright at United at first but then it predictably fall apart. Carrick, at least, did a decent job at Middlesbrough.

But they seem in a right mess.

I did notice Roy Keane say that part of the problem is that they've still got Sir Alex Ferguson "hanging around like a bad smell"

Roy Keane does make me laugh! Anyone would think he dislikes ‘Fergie’!

Agree it’s the better decision to bring in Carrick and (Darren) Evans. Both are the future; whether that be at ManUre or elsewhere going forward!

I think Amorim effectively ’sacked’ himself with his commments!

Probably the poorest Man U team overall I've seen in a long time

United have some very good players and some ordinary players.
The problem is that they play as individuals and have not knitted together as a team.
Anorim had to go. He did not improve the organisation of the team and appeared very stubborn with the three at the back system which did not suit the squad.
Some of his comments while he was team coach/ manager suggested he was asking to be relieved of the job.
I can't imagine he was ever happy there.
I expect Carrick to have a rough time, but will stabilise the team who will end up just above mid table.
It remains to be seen whether the new permanent manager will take this great club forward.
