FA Cup holders knocked out by sixth tier club

Sat Jan 10, 2026 2:12 pm

FA Cup holders Crystal Palace have been knocked out of the FA Cup.

They were beaten 2-1 away at sixth tier Macclesfield in the Third Round.

It's the first time the holders have been knocked out by a non league team since Wolves in 1908/09 - they coincidentally lost to Palace, who were in non league at the time.

there were only two divisions in those days and presumably Palace would have been in the Southern league which was the third tier, so todays result is much more remarkable.

What a result; and Macclesfield were value for it!

What a turnaround fur Palace in the FA Cup!

Last time they played a game in the competition, it was at Wembley to win it!

Crystal Palace have allowed Macclesfield to keep 100% of the ticket sales for today’s FA Cup game between the 2 sides.

Typically, gate receipts in FA Cup ties are split between the 2 clubs. A great gesture by The FA Cup holders.
