MORE CARDIFF PLAYERS WILL LEAVE IN JAN THAN WILL COME IN:

Cardiff expect more exits than signings in January

Cardiff City are looking to add to their squad in the January transfer window – but there could be more departures than arrivals, says head coach Brian Barry-Murphy.

8th January 2026

Having already sent youngsters such as Luey Giles and Will Spiers out on loan to Non League , Cardiff are keen to give other young fringe players - including Dakarai Mafico and Tanatswa Nyakuhwa - first-team experience elsewhere.

Senior figures such as goalkeeper Ethan Horvath City are looking to send out again and Jak Alnwick has been Sold to Huddersfield Town.

"Loaning players out are very important for the young players coming through. There's nothing concrete on Dakarai or Tanatswa yet. We think something is imminent.@

"We just want to get them playing sooner rather than later to make sure that we don't miss any game-time for them."
Young forward Michael Reindorf has returned to Cardiff following his loan at Newport County but Barry-Murphy said: "The intention is for him to go back out on loan again and find an opportunity to play more than he did at Newport."

“I expect more players to go out this January than to come in.”

SO FAR JAN 2026:

9th January 2026: Dakarai Mafico has joined National League ( Non League )outfit Yeovil Town on loan for the remainder of the 2025/26

7th January 2026: Jak Alnwick has been sold to League One club Huddersfield Town.

4th January 2026: Michael Reindorf's loan spell at Newport County has ended. The Cardiff City striker scored just once in 22 appearances for the League Two club
Reindorf is to be sent out again.

3rd January 2026: Defensive duo Luey Giles and Will Spiers have both joined National League ( Non League) side Eastleigh on loan for the remainder of the 2025/26 campaign.

Re: MORE CARDIFF PLAYERS WILL LEAVE IN JAN THAN WILL COME IN

Fri Jan 09, 2026 12:58 pm

Never expected loads of signings this window because January is always awkward to buy players. Two or three loans will be enough.

Alnwick has obviously gone with Horvath to follow. The players going out on loan will be Nyakuhwa, Mafico and Reindorf again. Giles and Spiers obviously gone out on loan already.

So the question is would any of those seven players be involved in the league in the second half of the season? I don't think so.

Nyakuhwa has come off the bench for just a few minutes and showed he's not ready. Mafico has played a bit more but not much, also needs to play regularly in a loan. The other five haven't been involved in the league at all, three of them been on loan at other clubs.

So although it's seven leaving and only two or three coming in, the players leaving won't actually make any difference to our first team squad - in my opinion anyway.

Not for one second did I believe Tan would back BBM.

Let’s hope BBM continues to do a great job :bluebird: :bluebird:

Re: MORE CARDIFF PLAYERS WILL LEAVE IN JAN THAN WILL COME IN

Fri Jan 09, 2026 1:20 pm

We all know we need a few recruits if we are serious about promotion if we go with what we got and players get injured such as salec we will have to play Robinson twice a week and 90 minutes does he have that in him ? We obviously need left back cover,

But injuries and red cards could bugger us up if we bring in nobody and what a shame that would be to miss out on promotion because we were down to the bare bones,

but if that's the way murphy tan and the majority of fans want it, a small sqaud fair enough but to late when january has gone .
Just hope it does not come back to bite us.

Re: MORE CARDIFF PLAYERS WILL LEAVE IN JAN THAN WILL COME IN

Fri Jan 09, 2026 1:25 pm

None of those leaving have really contributed this season so not going to be a miss, would be crazy if we don't strengthen with another 2 or 3 though.

A left back is a must, NG or Kpakio for a game or 2 is fine but if anything happens and we are without Bagan for a month or 2 we lose a lot of attacking down that side.

Another striker who is a similar style to Salech also.

If we can keep everyone else and bring these 2 positions in id be happy

Re: MORE CARDIFF PLAYERS WILL LEAVE IN JAN THAN WILL COME IN

Fri Jan 09, 2026 2:22 pm

Really no need to panic we already have the deepest squad in the division, with left back being the only real issue if Bagan is out. Get rid of Hovarth, loan some kids out, one or two loans in and it's all good. January isn't a great time to buy and we don't need to

This is correct, but whisper it quietly! :laughing6:

This fixation about pure numbers is not one that cuts with me. BBM stated at the start of the season that he preferred to work with a smaller (not small) squad that had players who could interchange without overly affecting playing standards; a squad he could mould and improve, whilst creating an atmosphere of ‘togetherness

Has it not worked? :?

We already have the ‘best’ squad in League One, we are at the top of the table, and we are the bookies favourites by some distance!

Clearly, we need a back up left back to compete with the excellent Joel Bagan, and maybe an additional striker to see out the season, so no argument there!

However, a squad full of ‘can’t play/won’t plays’’ just to have ‘numbers’ like previous seasons is not the way forward! :ayatollah:

I'm with you on this. Definitely require back up for Salech as I don't think we take enough of our chances or sometimes don't create enough - that's been proven.

Secondly, we must have a left footed left back to support Bagan - if he gets injured, I feel it will have a big impact on our creativity, defensive solidity and balance at the back.

Sort it out BBM!

Tan won’t put a penny in but BBM has No other choice but to get on with the job and say he’s been backed ( Not a penny).

I think most fans including me are not expecting us to buy anyone,
but most will agree including yourself, cover for bagan and salec,
Who is fixated with numbers as you say?

We have off loaded 3/4 already possibly 2 keepers are left back and .midfielder so bbm must have been told to get in, get rid, same as pre season was it about 18 we moved off the books lucky for us the academy has given us 2 colwills lawlor bagan Ashford kapakio and the return of wintle and davies.

Re: MORE CARDIFF PLAYERS WILL LEAVE IN JAN THAN WILL COME IN

Fri Jan 09, 2026 5:20 pm

Honestly don't see this as any big deal.

It's players who wouldn't even play that are leaving.

He's already said that incomings don't rely on outgoings. He's already said he's looking for a LB.

People were stressing in the summer because BBM was happy with a small squad, and when you listen to his reasons why then it makes sense.

Some of our fans (not just on here but on social media too) weren't happy that we only brought in three. But look where we are compared to teams that brought in loads of players.

But don't see a few fringe players going out as a big issue.

Never expected big business this window - not because of Tan, but because January is always a difficult window.

Pointless paying over the odds or bringing in players that don't improve us. That's the mistake we've made in the past.

Tan must be loving this season: rookie manager who's largely unproven, but he's fairly comfortably got us top of what I would class as a fairly mediocre standard League 1.

And like you say, BBM has done this by brilliantly utilising and improving our academy lads and giving players like Robertson and Wintle a new lease of life.

Tan will have the view that we'll walk the League and once again, will see no reason to put his hand in his pocket because of how its gone to date. But as we know from history, the wheels can drop off if you don't consider improving the squad from a position of strength.
We are not out of sight, but a couple of clever signings could help us increase the gap or consolidate a top 2 place.

Message for Tan: back your manager, he deserves it.

Agree lije I said we only need cover for striker left back after that a bonus but most agree we need cover in these 2 positions imagine salec or bagan having the same injury as rubin,
no cover for left back,
or all on Robinson for the rest of the season

Re: MORE CARDIFF PLAYERS WILL LEAVE IN JAN THAN WILL COME IN

BBM has forthright views on how to play the game, manage it and the squad he wants.

Its interchangeable players, only a few starters; Trott, Bagan, Rubin and Salech the rest are swapped around.

11 on pitch
7 on bench
4 in the stands.

He has said as much, he doesn't want any player who can't contribute. There are no "squad players" they are all first teamers

Keepers
- 41 – Matthew Turner
- 13 – Nathan Trott

Defenders
- 2 – Will Fish
- 3 – Joel Bagan
- 12 – Calum Chambers
- 38 – Perry Ng
- 44 – Ronan Kpakio
- 4 – Gabriel Osho
- 48 – Dylan Lawlor

Midfielders
- 6 – Ryan Wintle
- 10 – Rubin Colwill
- 14 – David Turnbull
- 16 – Chris Willock
- 18 – Alex Robertson
- 24 – Eli King
- 27 – Joel Colwill

Forwards
- 11 – Ollie Tanner
- 22 – Yousef Salech
- 39 – Isaak Davies
- 45 – Cian Ashford
- 47 – Callum Robinson

Tomorrow we'll have 18 man squad with a bench that would start in any other team and still need to leave out one of the squad which by the sounds of it is Ashford.

I can see a left sided defender and a winger, no more unless someone comes in for Robinson

BBM is an owners wet dream.

Slash the wage bill, play the kids and still be top of the league and favourites to go straight back up.

Then in January he looks like he’s going to get rid of Hovarth and Alnwicks wages too

If he can get his team to shoot more he’ll actually be be Tans perfect manager

Think you're spot on here.

A lot of people, in fact most people, say that we didn't bring in many in the summer and won't bring many in this month because he's not being backed. He may or may not be being backed, I don't know.

But as you say, this is how he wants to run things. He likes this size of squad for the reasons you've given.

I also agree that LB and a winger will be his aims but if the right player doesn't come up, I think he'll be happy to leave it.
