Thursday 8th January 2026

Jak Alnwick has been sold to League One club Huddersfield Town.

RUBIN COLWILL EXPECTED BACK MIDD FEBRUARY / GREAT NEWS

BBM:

"Rubin's back running on the treadmill and we expect him to be back running on the grass next week.

Rubin will be back next month.”

“Rubin is a player we value hugely and having him back in our squad in February is something we're all looking forward to.”

BBM:

"The focus is on ourselves to be better than we were in the corresponding fixture and prove that we have improved from that..."

BBM: “We may need some help in.”

“Joel has done very, very well for us this season. But Luey Giles has gone on loan, so that's an area of our squad that we are aware that we may need some help in.”

BBM:

“ Striker Michael Reindorf will be going back out on loan.”

Reindorf has just returned from League 2 Newport County after 22 appearances but just 1 goal.

BBM: “ INJURY UPDATE “

“Cian Ashford had a dead leg in his calf, so he’s a doubt for the weekend, and Dylan Lawlor came off with some fatigue-related hamstring issues, so we’ll check on him.

"The rest of the squad is in a pretty good place off the back of those games, so we’re really keen to train exceptionally well today and tomorrow to give us the best chance to play really well on Saturday and try to win.

“Rubin Colwill is back running on the treadmill, so we expect him to be on the grass next week. Eli King is doing some straight running, so both are making exceptional progress, albeit with different timescales based on the severity of their injuries.”

At present, Perry Ng, Ronan Kpakio and Joel Bagan are the only recognised full-backs available, with the latter the sole natural left-back.

BBM:

“I think that's a very fair assessment,” Barry-Murphy said when asked about the lack of depth.

“We were obviously very comfortable using Perry or Ronan at left-back alongside Joel.“

He said head of recruitment Patrick Deboys has been tasked with tying down players the club see as central to their long-term plans.

“The main focus has been securing the players that we have and rate so highly,” he said.

“We have seen so much progress this season. The likes of Ronan, Dylan [Lawlor] and Isaak [Davies] committing to long-term contracts is a big part of what I’m asking him to focus on.

BBM:

“The main outcomes for us at the moment have been trying to secure the loans that we think are very important for the young players coming through.”

Barry-Murphy added that loan moves for midfielders Dakarai Mafico and Tanatswa Nyakuhwa could be imminent, with the club keen to ensure they do not miss valuable game time during the second half of the season.”

ETHAN HORVATH

There could also be movement in the goalkeeping department. Ethan Horvath has returned to Cardiff following the end of his loan spell at Sheffield Wednesday, but Barry-Murphy confirmed the American international is attracting widespread interest, with an eye on securing regular football ahead of the World Cup. He has previously been linked with a number of MLS teams.

“Ethan’s got a lot of interest from a lot of different places,” he said.

“It’s up to him and we’ll support him in whatever he decides is best to find the football that he wants before the end of the season.”

“ ORIENT “

“We’re expecting equally as difficult a challenge,” Brian began. “They’re a very dynamic team and have been very successful over the past couple of seasons with their brand of football and saw how many difficulties we had against them in the game at CCS, and no doubt this Saturday will be equally as tough.

“It’s clear how dangerous they are and how potent a team they are. The focus is on ourselves to be better than we were in the corresponding fixture and prove that we have improved from that, because we need to.

“This week has been a chance for us to recover from the intense Christmas period, but it moves pretty quickly and we’re going to train this afternoon and check in on everyone."

Reflecting on the first half of the season as the second gets underway, Brian emphasised his desire for continued improvement throughout the squad.

BBM:

“It has to be one game at a time for us," he continued. "We have a very young squad and we have some very valuable well experienced members, which is beneficial as it means that we don’t get too carried away or look too far ahead.

“We have to maintain our progress and improve. All of the players in our team can improve a lot individually, and if they do that then the team will get stronger and we’ll win the games that we need to win.

“The players have adapted really well and I’m very grateful for what they’ve done, but they understand the minute we stand still in this game we start to not progress at the rate that we expect and demand.

"We can improve a lot; we created a lot of chances in the previous games and didn’t take enough of them, and we had a clean sheet last week but want more of that. We want to become a much more efficient team at converting chances we created, and creating more of them to be more successful in the second half of the season."

“Eli King is also progressing well and it's beneficial for them to have each other (Rubin) while they're recovering from their injuries.

Eli's injury is obviously more long term. We expect him to train with us fully before the end of the season. When you come back from an ACL, there is an extended period of training.

So we don't expect him to play for us this season but the more training he can get, will benefit his return in the summer a lot."

MORE CARDIFF PLAYERS WILL LEAVE IN JAN THAN WILL COME IN:

Cardiff expect more exits than signings in January

Cardiff City are looking to add to their squad in the January transfer window – but there could be more departures than arrivals, says head coach Brian Barry-Murphy.

8th January 2026

Having already sent youngsters such as Luey Giles and Will Spiers out on loan to Non League , Cardiff are keen to give other young fringe players - including Dakarai Mafico and Tanatswa Nyakuhwa - first-team experience elsewhere.

Senior figures such as goalkeeper Ethan Horvath City are looking to send out again and Jak Alnwick has been Sold to Huddersfield Town.

"Loaning players out are very important for the young players coming through. There's nothing concrete on Dakarai or Tanatswa yet. We think something is imminent.@

"We just want to get them playing sooner rather than later to make sure that we don't miss any game-time for them."
Young forward Michael Reindorf has returned to Cardiff following his loan at Newport County but Barry-Murphy said: "The intention is for him to go back out on loan again and find an opportunity to play more than he did at Newport."

“I expect more players to go out this January than to come in.”
