Update - Martin O'Neill named Celtic manager until end of the season

Next Celtic manager odds as Cardiff City's Brian Barry-Murphy among favourites
By Glen Williams

Cardiff City boss Brian Barry-Murphy has emerged among the early favourites to become the next permanent Celtic manager following the Scottish giants’ decision to part company with Wilfried Nancy.

Bookmakers have installed the 47-year-old as a leading contender after his impressive start to life in the Welsh capital, with Cardiff sitting three points clear at the top of League One midway through the season. Barry-Murphy is listed at 9/1 in the latest betting, placing him alongside Ipswich Town manager Kieran McKenna in the early market.

Former Celtic manager Martin O’Neill heads the odds at 4/7, with ex-Hibs boss Shaun Maloney (10/3) and Ange Postecoglou (11/2) also prominent.

Other names in the running include Robbie Keane, Scott Brown, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Craig Bellamy and Roberto Martinez.

Barry-Murphy’s inclusion comes amid growing recognition of the work he has done at Cardiff since his appointment, transforming the Bluebirds into promotion front-runners following relegation last season.

It is not the first time Barry-Murphy has been linked with a move away from Cardiff. The former Manchester City academy coach has previously been mentioned in connection with roles at Middlesbrough and Celtic, while recent reports also suggested he was on the radar of French side Strasbourg.

However, when asked directly about those Strasbourg links after Cardiff’s latest win on Sunday, Barry-Murphy was quick to play down speculation and reaffirm his commitment to the Bluebirds.

He’s going to be linked to every single vacancy from now until he finally leaves. It’s actually quite a novelty to have someone want to poach our manager. Normally don’t go near them with a barge pole, and for good reason.

Why would he go to Celtic? They're Championship level at best & he's going to end up there with us anyway.

Don't they usually go for failed PL managers anyway rather than up & coming young managers?

I’m right behind Murphy and what’s he has done.
Do you think any of the link teams are actually seriously considering him?
I don’t. And I hope they’re not, he’s and excellent half a season, with a good squad in a poor poor league. He had a lot to learn and hopefully that journey continues in an upward direction with us.

I hope this doesn't happen. I don't think it will. I think most celtic fans will want a big proven name after the Nancy appointment. Especially with Rangers appeared to be having researgence

I don't see him leaving this season.

But if we get promoted and start well next season, then is the time to be worried.

He may look at Matt Bloomfield's situation. Was in the top three in this league with Wycombe, took the Luton job in the Championship. Then got relegated and started this season badly.

Now out of work.

I’m not being funny but if I owned Celtic I’d be looking at a manager with higher league experience.I bet half of Celtic fans haven’t even heard about him.
Although it’s not a great league it’s still a big club with money.

That's true.

Martin O'Neill until the end of the season makes sense for them.

Martin O'Neill now named Celtic manager until the end of the season.

Right decision for them.

The salary I get but not the Champions league as they last about as long as TNS, not as big of a draw as people think. They have a habit of ruining good managers though.

Not sure I agree with that.

O'Neill did well there initially and went on to do a brilliant job at Villa.

Ange won everything for them but his reputation was ruined in the Premier League.

Nancy last managed in the MLS so hardly a big reputation.

Rodgers did well there in the first spell. Then did well at first in England before it went bad, went back there and won the league. Mainly left because their board didn't back him.

Both Rangers and Celtic are as weak as I can remember, apart from Rangers years in the lower leagues. When times are good they’re both Euro League level, indeed both clubs have reached the final. So realistically they’re mid Premiership level, or at least financially capable of competing at that level. As has been stated, BBM will be linked with every vacancy going, unless he takes SB27s project managers job. :D
Being realistic when Cardiff go up, BBM will be on a lot of clubs radar and if Tan doesn’t back him, he’ll be gone.

Haha. Brilliant.

But on a serious note I’m on the look out for a new project.
