BBM: Tan will be happy with the Chambers goal

Sun Jan 04, 2026 8:04 pm

Brian Barry-Murphy:

"Calum Chambers' goal will be one for the boss in Malaysia.

He'll be very pleased watching that. He's been telling me about the importance of shooting from that sort of distance.

And of course he's always right and can help us a lot in that area."

I don’t agree at all with the VT “shoot from the goalkeeper” approach, but it does make me chuckle that when we’re patiently circulating the ball around the opposition’s final third trying to probe and break them down, half the stadium is doing exactly the same thing, shouting “shoooooot!”. We’re a wonderfully hypocritical bunch on times

Can't argue with shooting..for all our 81% possession we only won with a 25 yard shot. Without out that it would have been 1 point

When we are just outside the penalty area and there is space we should instinctively shoot. We don't do it enough.

I agree we should but if you look at most games there seems a reluctance throughout football especially in the Prem where they seem to want to walk the ball in.

Watching the match live on the feed & on replays you can hear quite a few people in the crowd shouting "SHOOT!" just before he does indeed shoot.

True, but some fans shout shoot as soon as we cross the half way line.

Chambers' goal was about one in 50. Most times that sails over the bar, which is why we don't normally shoot from that range.

It is always better to stick with the way we're playing and waiting for the higher opportunity. Even if it means Salech heading it over.

It was more to do with the fact that I could actually hear individual people shouting shout rather than the usual crowd noise drowning them out. I get that there's always people shouting it, I do it myself sat in front of the ipad sometimes but there's nobody here to hear me, thankfully.

Sometimes there's no harm in having a go from distance, not everything has to be a slow build up every time.

To be fair, opposition players normally block off the long shot opportunity which is maybe why we don't do it more - I don't know but that's my impression.

Wigan were so deep that shots were range were on. Chambers had a few and Robertson's that was deflected would have gone in if it wasn't for a brilliant save.

But most games there is no point in shooting from range because the path to goal is blocked. Don't know why most don't see that.
