The Difference and Quality is Massive:

Fri Jan 02, 2026 9:34 am

Birmingham City last season ran away with League 1 ( Division 3) and were doing better than Cardiff City:

But just look how they are recently doing in the Championship this Season:

Fair comment there. Brum are struggling and I think that without quality, proven championship experience, we would too.

I know where you are going with this Annis.

Birmingham had a far better squad than us but have hardly improved it this season. i feel there is a benchmark here for us to look at. Thats going to be over to Tan to sort out.

They're still only nine points off the play-offs though.

Wrexham went up with them and are three points off the play-offs.

Can also point out that Ipswich got back to back promotions with nearly the same team.

Brum certainly appear to have hit a bit of a wall, but they’ll be okay this season

Wrexham are fast becoming an in-form team in the Championship and would have been amongst those play-off places, had they beaten a poor ‘Jacks’ side recently

There are at least three very poor sides in the Championship, who will inadvertently protect some poor teams above them, so I expect (sadly) the ‘Jacks’ to survive off the back of them!

I’m sure Wrexham spent over £30mill

I know some are saying this squad would do well in the Championship, I 100% Say No it would not, many would not make it and we would have to spend.

Most also said we wouldn't be near the top of this league with our current squad.

Of course we'd need a few additions but not loads of signings.

I think our style of play suits the Championship more than league one. That’s been shown this season when we’ve faced Premier league opposition in the cup.

We’d definitely need some new signings though.

Ned,

This league is far far worse than I thought it would be.

You can’t compare with the Championship at all.

The majority of clubs are so small they have support as low as 4,000

Wintle, Willock, Chambers, NG et all proved thier level last season. That's not taking anything from this season. Wintle and Willock are L1 players. Arguably Tanner, Davies and Ashford also. Que meltdowns because we're top and BBM etc, but that's my opinion.

I think we need to be strengthening for the Championship in this window.

Genuine championship quality, for me...

- Salech
- Trott
- Lawler
- Bagan
- Robertson
- Rubin

I'd then say Pysgod & NG back on this form could do a job; but without recruits, Im not as confident as some. We'll need to add quality.

We absolutely would need to strengthen but then I suspect BBM is aware of that.
But we are where we are, and right now the goal is promotion from league 1 and the players we have IMHO are capable of doing that. The earlier we tie up promotion the earlier the task of consolidation back to the championship can begin. I think BBM will have an eye for a player too hope Tan lets him get on with it having seen he is a trustworthy guy.

The 3 times we've played teams in a higher league this season, twice we've outplayed them (burnley + Wrexham) and Chelsea we more than matched for most of the game, so whilst I don't think we would be near the top 6 in the championship with this squad I believe we would comfortably stay up

Cup Competitions are totally a different world , one off games.

Chelsea and Burnley also fielded second strong sides

This side is 100% not a Championship Side

Plenty if quality but money would have to be spent

100% Agree we will need to strengthen if we want to be competitive but I feel we have the nucleus of a good side, with a few quality additions and bbm,s coaching ability I wouldn't bet against back to back promotions

Our players and managers have proved people wrong this season. They can do the same next season.

Don't buy into the argument that leagues are weak, because they say that every season. I also don't think teams are poor just because they have small fanbases.

Lincoln aren't a massive club but I thought they were very good.

Fact is Ipswich got back to back promotions with virtually the same team. It can be done.

Annis I totally agree , we would really struggle
In championship , the level is quite there to see , our mistakes would get punished in championship .
Would need to strengthen squad considerably

Richy,

Everyone gets carried away if they are doing very well say Championship or League 1 and get a shock when they get promoted.

Remember we went up twice to the Prem and look what happened to us, Massacred.

Rotherham, Barnsley, Wigan, Plymouth, Oxford etc do really well in League 1 then struggle big time in the Championship

Yes I agree there is a big gap between L1 and the championship as there is between the other divisions.

I definitely think we’d need to strengthen if we get promoted.
We’d need a few more experienced players in my opinion but of course the question is will Tan sanction this?

For now, I’m not too bothered as I’m enjoying the season and the football. It’s been a long time since I’ve said that.
