Was Ninian park built on a rubbish tip?

It was. Apparently the players had to pick bits of glass that had made their way up to the grass before each game

The pitch was built on clinker waste from the industries burning coal on Penarth Rd, glass would often cut players too. More detail on this in the excellent Fred Keenor book which I can highly recommend.

Ninian Crichton Stewart, son of the Marquis of Bute, put up the money to enable City to rent ground. Hence Ninian Park. He was killed at battle of Loos in 1915. Statue out side museum
