UPDATE: APPEAL - FOR BLUEBIRD LEGEND DON MURRAY

Cardiff City great issues plea amid battle

The family of Cardiff City icon Don Murray have issued an emotional plea for support as the club legend continues his battle with Lewy Body Dementia.

Murray, who made more than 400 appearances for the Bluebirds and famously featured in the club’s historic clash with Real Madrid at Ninian Park, now requires round-the-clock care as his condition deteriorates.

A GoFundMe page has been launched to help cover the growing cost of his daily support, with a target of £26,000. At the time of writing, just over £1,280 has been raised.

In a heartfelt message, Murray’s family described the devastating impact of the disease, which affects memory, movement, behaviour and sleep, and can progress into Parkinson’s.

To thousands of City fans, Don is the man who made over 400 appearances for the Bluebirds – among them that night against Real Madrid,” the family wrote.

To us, he’s our beloved husband, father and grampy. It was awful news when he was diagnosed with Lewy Body Dementia, and as a disease that gets worse over time, Don is now unable to care for himself, requiring round-the-clock assistance.”

They are now appealing to supporters, friends and the wider football community to help fund Murray’s ongoing care needs.

The Murray family are encouraging supporters and friends to donate towards Don’s daily welfare and ongoing care,” they added. “We wish to say a special thank you to all the truly amazing fans and friends who have already been in touch with us to offer support.”

They also urged those unable to contribute financially to share the fundraising page to help spread the word: “Any donations are appreciated as we work to arrange ongoing care for Don. If you are unable to donate, we kindly ask that you share this page with fellow City fans: it will help us all enormously.”

Imagine, if we all gave just £1, we would meet the target! :ayatollah:

I never saw Don Murray play but his reputation has always been great amongst older city fans. I'm going to donate a tenner but agree with Svens suggestion, can we get a £1 for Don campaign going, it would be a fantastic gesture from our fanbase.

I remember Don Murray with great fondness, nothing went past him. He was a fantastic legend of of a player who stayed here despite coming from Scotland. I know he married a Welsh girl but he still was going to games up to a few years ago, I remember seeing a photo of him at a home game. This disease /illness has probably been brought on due to the heavier balls they used to play with, and there weren't many header duels that he didn't win and I don't think he was that tall compared to centre backs today. I think that even newer fans of today could stump up a few pounds to help him out in his final years. I donated £10 last night and at that point I believe about £3260 had been raised, maybe a bucket collection could be done on Saturday.

My memory of Don Murray playing when I was a boy on the Bob Bank - City have a corner, Don and the opposition centre forward are stood in the centre circle, Don eyeing up how he was going to stop the opponent getting past him. Different times and different football but more than 50 years later, that image of resolute determination sticks in my memory as a treasure.

First remember him flattening the Jack when we were 3-0 up with 20mins to. Got sent off and we lost 5-3! He denies to this day that he didn't connect! As a child coming back from my first away at Birmingham he took the time to speak to me in the buffet car. He had a leather jacket on and seemed to tower over me and I was both terrified and in awe.A real hard man but a great servant and many years later I came across him playing in the local pub quiz.

Deserves our support now.

Think there's a collection for the food bank on Saturday but should have a collection for this on Tuesday.

Big crowd so should be able to raise plenty for him.

Ticking up nicely but still a long way to go!

Fingers crossed, the club see this and feel they can contribute, too, if they haven’t already!

Don Murray; what (genuine) Bluebird legends are made of! :bluebird: :bluescarf:  :notworthy: :ayatollah:
Update: £5,465 raised of £26K :ayatollah:

Any form of dementia is an awful thing to go through for the sufferer and their loved ones. I do wish Don Murray and his family all the best and hope his remaining time is a kind and peaceful one.

My father had dementia and went into care and passed away in 2017. It cost my sister and myself thousands for his care.

My father-in-law was diagnosed with dementia 8 months ago and 2 months ago had a stroke. My wife is constantly on the go driving here, there and everywhere for the parents she loves so dearly. Her mother is also showing signs of early dementia and we both know her mother and father will eventually end up in care which again will cost us thousands of pounds which we will have to find.

So hopefully you will forgive me for not being sympathetic and donating to a gofundme for a condition that millions of families go through every day costing them thousands of pounds to care for their loved ones.
