Callum Robinson says 'I don't want to be on the bench' as Cardiff City boss makes admission

The forward proved the match-winner with a stunning goal to down Stevenage on Tuesday night

Callum Robinson insists he is determined to play a bigger role in Cardiff City’s League One title charge after coming off the bench to fire a stunning winner against Stevenage on Tuesday night.

“Like every player, I don’t want to be on the bench. No one wants to be on the bench,” he said after netting the winner.

“Everyone wants to be out there. But everyone will play their part and hopefully I can do that.

“It’s going to be a long season. When I come on the pitch I want to try and score goals, do what I do and try to help the team get the win.

"The manager, Bri, he wants to win every game. We are top of the league. We would definitely have taken a point, but that’s why we are top – because we go to win games, we don’t just try to hold out.”

The forward also said he has been urging team-mates to ensure Cardiff build strong “foundations” ahead of a congested winter schedule which could stretch the squad to its limits.

“I have been saying to the boys at the training ground, there are going to be a lot of fixtures coming,” he said.

But we need foundations before they come. We need to put ourselves in a good place before those games come and then those games will handle themselves.”

The good thing is he's not become unsettled even though he's on the bench. He's just kept working and came up with the big moment last night.

Even in that interview, he's speaking in a very positive way.

Problem is where he would fit into the team. The system isn't going to change, that's the manager's DNA and it's what's working.

So it's either at ten, out wide or ahead of Salech.

He's not going to play every game ahead of Salech for obvious reasons.

I don't think he's a winger.

And I think Kellyman did better as a ten than he did - but it should be those two that compete for that position until Rubin is back, because I'm not convinced by Joel playing there and BBM clearly sees Robertson as better a bit further back like last night.

I think there will be games where Robinson can play in the 10 just behind Salech with Kellyman out wide, it was what won us the game last night, I think the fact we have so many different options in the top half of the field makes us very difficult for opposing teams to formulate a plan as they just never know which front 4 we will put out and all of our forward players have different strengths so it's hard for teams to plan against us

It's not like we haven't started him at 10, he is not a 10. He is a striker, we just played the last 10 mins with heaven forbid 2 strikers!!

Credit to BBM for being aggressive and CR47 for being a great instinctive striker. When he doesn't have to think about it he is top notch.

He is an old 30-year-old. He doesn't run enough, tackle, nor is he strong enough to be a lone striker. The injuries have taken their toll. He is a second striker when BBM wants that threat. I just can't see BBM starting with 2 strikers

I am sure he was available over the summer but high wages and a poor recent injury record probably put a few off. He is just going to be a super sub as he doesn't fit the high workload scheme fo BBM.

Top-notch tactics from the gaffer. That was our physically biggest and strongest 1st team, we won that battle, tired them, then won the football battle. In the end it was whether the final whistle would save a point for Stevenage or not.... :D

Agreed. The takeaway I had from the interview was very positive and one of a squad pulling together as a team. I've been hugely impressed with how Callum and Willock have been this season. If I am honest they were the two I thought might drag their feet at dropping down a level, but they have both worked really hard this season.

Cracking goal as well.
