Not sure how I stumbled on this, but I've heard Annis speak about this game before....I wasn't there being a holier than thou 9 year old!!!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q-Ir7_6sMtwIt sounds like it was utter carnage, but if any of you guys were there, are this guy's recollections in line with what you witnessed?

I was there as a youngster and it was a surreal day; being a mix of excitement (for the game itself), apprehension (as we knew as ManUre’s ‘
Bay City Roller’ mob had a reputation, whilst ours (to that point) was still building, and some fear (at such a young age) when it kicked off big-time outside and inside the stadium!
I recall one incident where railway ballast (the stones under the rails) were being thrown from Ninian Park Halt bridge, but I’m never sure if that was ManUre, Chelsea, or Millwall; all of who had ‘
battles’ on visits to Ninian Park?
No matter who says otherwise, it was
not a pleasant day for anyone not looking for (what was then called) ‘
aggro’!
I did see this was put up from the opposite perspective last week…

I was a 13 year old canton stand season ticket holder, so went to every home and some away games. my mate from Llanrumney came with me that day to the Manure game.
I was never a hooligan type just a Bluebirds fan.
Got off bus around 12.30 in central bus station and as usual walked down Tudor road to Ninian Park.
I have never been so scared about half way down Tudor road - must have been around two to three hundred animals in group throwing bricks through peoples windows, aluminium dustbins being thrown at residents and US.
we ducked down behind some wall by side of house.
just my memories, I have never experienced such scum. I know Cardiff had some of them as well but watched the video above and at 10.50 mins saying a little bit of brick throwing !!! thats the understatement of 1974.

Jim,
Fair play he has given a very very honest account.
It was brutal that day and felt like a war.

All carried out in flares, platform shoes and skimpy leather jackets, a few sizes too small.

Bob bank was where the away fans mostly congregated but I don't remember any in the way of actual segregation.

the fence that seperated the bob bank from the grange end was put up especially for that game and stayed there until the old grangend was demolished

I don't remember when there wasn't a fence & thought it had been there for a while before then but it makes sense that it might be put there for that game. You could still get from one to the other though, just not as directly as that was the only place I remember to get a pie & a Bovril.

Used to go regularly at that time - 13 year old - My old girl put her foot down and said a def no for this, due to the papers, news bigging it up.
Couple of mates went, and stories of bricks and darts being thrown between both sides, and that due to still being able to go under the grange to the toilets (wall will a piss trough in) by the corner of the Grange / Bob bank, lots of aggro there.
But the fence, I'm sure came down, as again I'm sure there were at future matches occasions when half of the Grange used to run into the bob bank at any signs of opposing supporters being there?

I am fairly sure it stayed up. What point would there be in taking it down? There may have been a gate about two thirds down by the walkway. I cant remember But what used to happen as you say was that people would go down through the small exit half way along the stand and under the Grange onto the Bob bank.
