Ricardo Rees from Merthyr Town

Little write up here from a week ago:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/ar ... qpjqj8e2qo

After this, he scored a hat-trick on the weekend, and another 2 last night.

He played for us as a youngster, but do we need to take another look at this guy?

Yes, playing in a lower league, but still only 25 and an incredible rate of goals the last 3 seasons or more, so he could be a late bloomer.m!

I’d hate to disrupt the way Merthyr are going and would like to see us give them more of our academy boys on loan, but I think this striker will be eyed-up by EFL clubs soon, and could be worth a chance back here!

I’m interested to hear people’s thoughts/opinions; particularly any Cardiff supporters that have watched him/them the last few seasons :ayatollah:

I always keep eye on merthyr. And obviously Ricardo been stand out player for 3 seasons now. Very surprised he's still there tbh. But think he needs a few games at higher level (maybe national league) to see if it continues. But sure there's a few clubs got an eye on him.
Big step from merthyr to league football. But would be a fairytale and potentially money earner if it did turn to vardy or Ian Wright who was also a late developer

Seen him play he’s absolute quality. Would happily sign him on a 2 year deal and probably wouldn’t be on a big wage and no relocation issues (1.5-2k a week tops) and send him on loan straight back to Merthyr or even national league.

Hopefully BBM WILL TAKE A LOOK AT HIM looks a real prospect!!!

I reckon I could score a few goals at Welsh level and my back is not good.

So my thinking is he'd have been found before now if he had something about him.

If we want to be a Championship team again we shouldn’t be looking at 25 year old Merthyr players.

Look at Paul mullin, absolutely tore it up in the national league but each level he went up he became less effective to the point Wrexham got rid, we need to plan for the future and should be setting our sights slightly higher than national league north no disrespect meant to Ricardo Rees as he's lethal at that level

Merthyr are doing well again this season after last seasons promotion .

How the mighty have fallen when we're looking at Merthyr Town players.

Not for me, good luck to the lad, but we need to be looking at higher quality than a Merthyr player.

Arsenal and Leicester supporters said that when they signed Ian Wright and Jamie Vardy respectively and look how they worked out! ;)

It’s not an exact science, and occasionally a ‘punt’ will pay off at less real cost than signing an expensive ‘duds’ like Yalu Meite, Sheyi Ojo, and Max Watters! :ayatollah:

No they didn't, I just checked:

"When Jamie Vardy signed for Leicester City in 2012, some fans were skeptical, viewing it as a large step up from non-league football and worrying the investment was a waste of money."

"Some fans questioned the signing, believing it was too big a leap from non-league football to the Championship and that the £1 million fee was too high."

...and Ian Wright was signed from Crystal Palace; where he had 225 appearances and 90 goals initially in the 2nd tier but predominantly in the top tier. Palace signed him from non-league.

Both of course being absolute anomalies in the 1000s that have a good goalscoring season in lower leagues. Both cases were signed from a league above Merthyr; also.

CCFC aren't looking at the player so in what way is it embarrassing? One guy on a forum mentioned him so does that make him embarrassing?

Agree with other comments, not a risk worth taking in my view.

Not sure BBM would be interested either. The club gave him a ton of names he could sign in the summer that he said no to, so can't see him sanctioning a move like this.

Are you really telling me the club give him the green light to sign a ton of names before a ball was kicked and he only chooses two loans. Really ned do you believe everything the club and BBM say as what he really thinks although he can't tell us that as he's in a job. He could have probably sign 11 players he knows beyond better than them all if that was the case but he would rather use what we got i suppose. Come on ned pull your head out of the clouds man. Yes he's doing a good job with what we got but everyone knows deep down if he had the backing we would have had alot more come in who are better than what's here despite the spin he says in interviews as he has to do his job :bluescarf:

Yes that is true.

Look at all our previous windows of signing players that nobody else wanted, that's what BBM was offered and he said no.

That's part of the reason he's been successful. He's had a small squad but the vast majority have been high quality. He didn't want the sort of signings that have been forced on managers before him.

That's pretty obvious and anyone who can't see that simply aren't looking at the facts or history.

These names will keep popping up..are they worth a punt or not?
A while ago it was Will Evans 20 odd goals for Newport. He's playing against us Saturday..but 20 goals in 56 games for Mansfield is a v good strike rate in a average side

My correction; Palace and Leicester

Some of our fans really need to wake up.

We absolutely have to steer clear of these types of players, we’re never going to progress as a club if we go signing players from Merthyr.

I was only looking for opinions cos the boy is doing well. I’m not saying the club are after him.
But I certainly believe he’s 1 to keep an eye on and would be pittance and low risk to some we have who don’t perform :ayatollah:

Don't rise to over reactions mate.
I know where your coming from as I said above I keep eye out for merthyr as not too far away from me and cracking atmosphere tbf if anyone can get there when Cardiff not playing etc.
I don't think he will make too high a league as said needs to show what he can do at levels. But definitely been ripping it up last 3 seasons.
