Northampton manager Kevin Nolan: "Disappointed. Another game

Sat Nov 22, 2025 6:18 pm

Northampton manager Kevin Nolan:

"Disappointed. Another game we have lost we should have got something out of.”

"We have got to be more clinical in front of goal. They showed that with the clinical strikes for the first and the third goal.
"We asked them lots of questions but what we didn't do was put the ball in the back of the net in those critical moments.
"With the bench they have and the resources, they are going to be able to make changes and punish you."

He's spot on. They missed some really good chances.

I am not a football fan, I only watch City, Wales, and the Premier League in the dark winter months, so I have never really watched lower league football and now understand how the football pyramid is truly a meritocracy.

I am still viewing games through championship eyes. I have lost track of the number of times I expect the net to rattle because i am accustomed to championship strikers, but it thankfully doesn't happen.

Any modicum of talent, especially up front, is hoovered up by bigger clubs ' stockpiling, but i can also see why we have bought so many L1 striking "duds" as the gap is much bigger than i thought and the truly exceptional ones are more expensive than we were willing to gamble.

Nolan can bemoan their finishing, but they are in L1 for a reason

Finishing is generally much worse at this level in comparison to the championship but hats off to Trott another worldie of a save yesterday.

Have said a few times that I'm not surprised about the difference in finishing.

In general the biggest differences between PL to Championship, Championship to L1, L1 to L2 etc is the finishing isn't as good and the defenders make more mistakes.

Quite often young midfielders can do well in L1 but go on to play well at a much higher level, whereas it seems to be a rarity for strikers and defenders for these reasons.

That's why you have strikers like Mark Harris being clinical in this league but struggling at Championship level.

I'll never forget the Arsenal game, we were the better team, but their 2 world class strikers had 2 half chances and buried them :(

I just didn't realize its almost the same gap between L1 and the championship, but it's more obvious in the misses rather than the goals.
