Should the EFL change the League One calendar?

Wed Nov 12, 2025 10:44 pm

Only five of the scheduled twelve League One games are going ahead this weekend because of international call-ups.

Obviously the Championship has a week off when it's international week. There are the same amount of games for Championship and League One clubs so wouldn't it make more sense to give League One the same calendar as the Championship? I suppose the Vertu Trophy may get in the way but there would be a way around that.

More and more League One clubs now have enough international players.

Not such an issue in League Two, all their games are going ahead.

Hopefully it won't be our problem after this season but just think the change of calendar would be much more sensible.

As the game goes more cosmopolitan across the EFL, it would make sense to adapt the Leagues to provide fairness, and a little respite, to those clubs now increasingly employing international players

The EFL has been boosted by these players, so should act accordingly

Notwithstanding that, I’m a firm believer that there is far too much international football in the calendar, as there is with ‘alternate’ competitions, such as the Virtu Cup and European Leagues, which were simply ‘cups’ when I was growing up, and are rapidly creeping towards the European Club Leagues that were so vilified at their last attempt to be created
