Aaron Ramsey:

“I still feel i have a lot to give.”

Despite being injury prone and missing the majority of games for Cardiff City ( 9 Starts in 2 yrs ) and the Mexican side ( 6 appearances in over 3mths) due to injury after injury

World Cup dream still driving him

Ramsey has been clear in that he wants to play in next year’s tournament in North America. Speaking earlier this year, he said the chance to lead Wales at another World Cup remained “a massive motivation” and that he still believed he could play at the highest level if he managed his body properly.

“I still feel I have a lot to give.”

“My aim is to be part of the squad for the World Cup. That’s the target.”

Wales’ route to that tournament likely now runs through the play-offs after defeat to Belgium last month, but qualification remains a realistic prospect. For that to happen, Craig Bellamy will need Ramsey fit, focused and playing regular football.

The MLS question

Ramsey’s move to Mexico was seen by some as a first step towards North American football ahead of the World Cup. Many pointed to Gareth Bale’s switch to LAFC before Qatar 2022 as an example of how playing in MLS can help manage a veteran player’s fitness and demands.

A move to the United States would still make sense football-wise. The pace, schedule and sports science structures in MLS are generally considered favourable to players who need careful load management.

Ramsey would also be guaranteed profile and likely a prominent role, too.

However, given the trauma his family has endured in Mexico, there may be a reluctance to uproot again. The question is whether Ramsey still sees North America as part of the plan or if the experience has changed his priorities entirely.

There are clearly many pros to him moving to America, for the short term at least.

A return home - but Cardiff feels very unlikely

If Ramsey is to prioritise stability, a return to south Wales seems the obvious first step. Should he spend time without a club, he is almost certain to train at the Vale of Glamorgan facility - shared by Wales and Cardiff City - just as Gareth Bale did during his time between contracts.

It’s understood Cardiff would always welcome Ramsey’s presence back in the building, but as a pay per play contract, which Ramsey declined. His status, connection to the club’s academy and relationship with staff and fans would ensure that.

But a permanent comeback?

That’s another matter.

The drawn-out saga over his future last summer left some at the club frustrated, and when Cardiff eventually rebuilt under Brian Barry-Murphy, they did so with a clear strategy: reduce age profile, increase intensity, prioritise hungry young players with durability and resale potential.

Ramsey - whether as a player, player-coach or player-manager - does not slot easily into that model. His wages, too, would be a significant challenge for a club that has dramatically tightened spending since relegation. And would Ramsey, really, want to be playing third-tier football? It just doesn't add up.

Also, would Ramsey even want to?

Sources have suggested it would be a surprise if he did want to return at all in that capacity.

Another Welsh club?

One option that may gather attention is Wrexham.

Phil Parkinson’s side have not shied away from signing experienced, high-profile players as they look to stabilise after a remarkable surge up the leagues. This summer alone saw the arrivals of Kieffer Moore, Nathan Broadhead, Conor Coady, Lewis O’Brien and Josh Windass.

He's in denial.

It was obvious especially last season that he needed to retire, a lot of us said that then and we'll still say it now.

He can't join a British club until January anyway.

He just needs to accept his playing career is over but doesn't look like that's happening.

1,000% agree with you and he’s ruining a great reputation he had Ned.

Taking money nowadays and giving Nothing back.

He’s finished.

Would anyone give up chance to go to WC with only around half a season left?
Obviously if don't qualify he retires... what he goes in interim depends if anyone willing to take him on ...pay per game scenario.

I think you are spot on there Alan. , why would anyone retire now with half a season left to have a chance of experiencing another World Cup.

He shouldn't even be considered for the World Cup given the amount of games he actually plays.

He won't be anywhere near match fit and will offer nothing on the pitch.

He just needs to get real and accept it's over.

If I was another player and an unfit Ramsey was picked ahead of me then I'd be pissed off.

Totally agree Ned,

His current record and previous years means he’s not good enough or fit enough or reliable due to being injury prone.

Completely agree, I like Ramsey and he's had a great career but he needs to realise it's time to call it a day.

He could come back and it could work, to be honest he'd probably look great in the current team, I don't see why pay as you play would be an issue, he can't be short of a few quid and this is just about being fit for Wales. Wales chances of qualifying for the world cup aren't the best and he probably knows that so my prediction is he's played his last game for anyone

He should also be no where near getting into the Wales side, great player in his prime but the last World Cup he was shocking
