BRIAN BARRY-MURPHY ACKNOWLEDGES CARDIFF’S DIP IN FORM

Mon Nov 03, 2025 1:23 pm

Acknowledges their dip in form with 5 Defeats in their last 10 games / But also Says:

BBM:

“I think we’ve got exceptionally talented players.”

“I believe we are improving as the season goes

BRIAN BARRY-MURPHY :

“When dips occur - when they naturally will - we have to use that fuel of disappointment and frustration, like we felt at Bolton, to drive us forward.

“There will be no let-up in our quest for that. I want the performances to reach the levels we’ve set and go beyond. I really believe in the talent in the dressing room., a brilliant group of players and they’ve shown they can produce it.”

“The challenge is to be more consistent and raise the standards within the club at all levels.”

“I think we’ve got exceptionally talented players.”

“Our squad is big enough,I don’t need a bigger one.”

“I believe we are improving as the season goes on.”

Some supporters have questioned whether Barry-Murphy’s smaller squad leaves Cardiff short in key areas - particularly as fatigue and form start to test the group - and unable to rotate his squad sufficiently.

The mantra, generally, over the years at Cardiff has been to recruit heavily when things are on the downturn. But Barry-Murphy is of the complete opposite mindset. He wants to place his faith in the players at the club and coming through the academy.

Instead of signing swathes of new players to address any inconsistencies, Barry-Murphy appears committed to improving those currently at his disposal. It's perhaps a stance some might view as refreshing, given the money wasted on some signings in recent years.

I agree, we have shown great performances but do need to improve consistency.

I remain convinced the squad is the right size.

But interesting that he says he wants to raise standards "at all levels of the club", not just the first team. Suggests that he's not impressed with other parts of the club.

I have long said that it's after Christmas where we'll really kick on because these young players will have had half a season of experience of playing regularly for the first time and still believe that.

So if we're around where we are now at Christmas then I'll be happy and very confident of promotion.

But I think he's doing a great job so far - competing at the top of the league and in the quarter finals of a cup, can't ask any more than that.

Be on his head then if he does not want bigger squad and we fail promotion due to injuries and suspensions he should be able to manage a bigger squad .
If he does not want to do that fair enough and will take the pats on the back if we get promoted but will have to also take the flack if he fails due to a threadbare squad which could be likely due to what has been said above ,
Let's just hope it's the case we get promoted.

I generally agree with him. I think Tanner coming back will be huge and Wintle must play as first choice more instead of Turnbull. However we do need another left back as Bagan will be burnt out shortly and the more tired he becomes the more susceptible he will be to a hamstring going.

Agree we need an extra LB. That was the only thing we didn't bring in during the summer which I think we probably should have.

Been lucky up to now that Bagan hasn't reached five yellow cards or got a long term injury.

BBM is always vague on specifics, isn't he. He's very honest on his assessment of the overall, but very poker faced also.

What I see (albeit still more positive than not)..

- Our defence is good. Bagan is having a good season but unchallenged/uncovered. However we have 4 good CB's for this level and 2 good RB's. Trott will be in the team of the season. Zero issues for the back 5 from me. I've seen more positives than negatives for Osho. Get behind him.

- The two infront of the defence are poor and not winning their battles or impacting us going forward by a killer pass or creating assists (or even pinching a few goals). For me, this is our achilles heel. Swap a Wintle or Tunrbull for a Ollie Norwood or a Max Power and we're a different unit. Why we haven't seen Chambers in there much (for me) is baffling

- Our wingers are all slightly different attributes but playing the same 'system'. I'd love to see a signing in Jan on the wing, PLUS a Tanner fully fit. Kellyman should be ripping this division up; he's not. Same for Ashford. I actually think Isaac has been our best performer when on, but seems to be 4th pick.

- Cover/replacement/competition for Rubin isn't there. It's not Robbo. Take Rubin out, and Robbo simply cannot match Rubins press. A mis-firing Rubin usually means a mis-firing Cardiff. He's being doubled-up on the last few league games.

- Salech is fine (for me, but I understand why some give him stick). Goals are flowing. He's spending 3/4 of most games in a lone battle against 2 lumpers. Rubin needs to get around him more. Even when we see Robbo and Salech on together, it's like their always too much gap between them. Feed him, support him.

In summary:
- Defence is fine
- 2 holders cannot be Wintle and/or Turnbull if against an aggressive press.
- Do not play them together
- Wingers need to imrpove/new signings?
- Rubin needs cover/but also to arrive in the box more.
- Feed Salech. He is hungry.
