NEIL WARNOCK: “ RUBIN COLWILL “

Fri Oct 31, 2025 6:55 am

Rubin Colwill could be Cardiff City's answer to Paul Gascoigne, according to former manager Neil Warnock.
Colwill has been at the heart of the Bluebirds attack that has fired them into an early League One promotion push as well as the EFL Cup quarter-finals.

The attacking midfielder was man of the match in the cup win over Wrexham on Tuesday, having produced more key passes than any other player on the pitch.

The 23-year-old's goals and assists also earned Colwill a recall to the Wales squad earlier this month.
Now that form has even drawn comparisons to Gascoigne from the manager who saw him emerge through the youth ranks at Cardiff City.

At 23 years old Rubin has made over 150 appearances for the Bluebirds.

Neil Warnock:

"In my era Gascoigne was the player but you had to give him a free role," Warnock told Radio Wales Drive.
"He couldn't do anything in a team situation but he was that good you could do it.”

"I think Rubin is in that position for Cardiff.”

"He's as good as anything in the Championship if he's given a free role, and he works his socks off as well."

Gascoigne – nicknamed Gazza – is regarded as one of the best playmakers of his generation and one of the best English footballers of all time.

Colwill was not even born when Gazza was at his peak but Warnock believes the Welshman can develop into a key playmaker at the top level.

"He can play right at the very top of the Premier League if he continues like that," Warnock said.

"I remember saying to (Colwill), 'I'd give you a free role and build a team around you' and I think that's what Brian (Cardiff City manager Barry-Murphy) is doing."

Neil Warnock:

Warnock was Cardiff boss between 2016 and 2019, clinching a record eighth promotion as a manager when he guided the club to the Premier League for the first time in 2018.

That was the last league success at Cardiff, now in League One, but the veteran manager believes Barry-Murphy can clinch the first promotion since he was in charge.

"I've never enjoyed watching a Cardiff team as much since I left," said Warnock.
"Brian is doing a great job, they're like a breath of fresh air.

"They shouldn't have gone down last year with the players that they had, they should never have gone down when I look at it.

"I would have kept Joe Ralls because as the season goes on with all the games it's good to have an old head in there.

"But other than that they've brought in well, they entertain, the fans get behind them and they're only young."

He’s had a number of trials. But I heard NO

Thanks Annis. Hope you are good.
In fairness Neil told me the same comment about Reuben a few years ago. When I asked why he hadn’t when he was manager he said he wasn’t ready then due to consistency. He definitely is now and may receive some interest in January !

A waste of a good player, as a fill in, he would be great, i like warnock would have kept him just to help us get out of this division

Yes thanks John, your welcome :bluebird:

I hope all well with you.

Yes I remember you telling me you talk to Neil.

Rubin for me as well I’ve stood by. He’s a Top Championship player.

I am really surprised that Joe hasn’t found a club. Maybe BBM did make the right call

He did.

And Joe’s wages were more than 9 of our current players put together and that was after he had had his wages cut in half over 2yrs ago.

Annis, if only we had brought Warnock in for the last ten games last season he would have kept us up, no question, unfortunately we have a lunatic owner who thinks he's a football expert.

Personally don't respect Warnock at all and won't listen to what he has to say. Yes he got us promoted but too many dodgy dealings which did not end well.

Wasn't he at aldershot training? Surprised he hasn't signed for them on a low wage

I’ve also stood by Rubin from the first time I saw him play.

So many were criticising him for silly and different reasons which I found pathetic as I could see what a talent he was.
He still has inconsistencies but many young players do. He’ll keep improving as he has years before he reaches his peak.

As for Ralls maybe it was his wage demands that saw him leave.

I don’t know, but that aside I’d have kept him as a squad player and a well respected and great influence around the club in general.

Loved Warnock by the way he was a breath of fresh air and 100% he rejuvenated our club.

Rubin is 23 with over 150 appearances. We can't keep on saying he is young. Yes on his day unplayable but too inconsistent. Goes missing in many games. It does seem to be the case if Rubin plays well the team does..

Re: NEIL WARNOCK: “ RUBIN COLWILL “

Rubin is one of the best players we’ve had and some of our fans don’t deserve him. He needs our support and he can kick on to lead us to promotion and beyond.

I get that he’s frustrating at times but when he’s on it he’s on it and is untouchable.

He's not a kid but of course he's still young. Midfield players dont peak until they're 27, 28.

He's a little late in developing and inconsistent as I've already said and Warnock and BBM are right in their assessment of him.

He'll improve but of course many on here can't see the wood for the trees.

Re: NEIL WARNOCK: “ RUBIN COLWILL “

Rubin isn't quick; he doesn't rely on pace, so when those twitch muscles start to deteriorate, it won't affect his performance. Without serious injury, I see no reason why he can't play well into his mid 30's. His passing and game management will improve as he matures.

I have been out of the country this week, so missed the Wrexham game but the reports i had yesterday from neutrals were that he was head and shoulders the best player on the park.

If he's going to wander though, he needs a solid base and i don't think Turnbul offers that

I don’t ever say he’s still young, but this is the perfect age to step up again.

He has gone missing, but BBM believes in him big time and I have always believed from day one .

Re: NEIL WARNOCK: “ RUBIN COLWILL “

Ironically when Rubin was in the academy, warnock spoke out saying there is no one good enough at the academy and in his view, there wont be for a number of years.

If he was still at the club last season, none of our youngsters would be playing, we'd have an average age squad of around 30, and we would be flirting with relegation the moment he left.
