David Turnbull

As most fans I was excited when we signed Turnbull. A Scottish international with Champions League experience and having scored 30 goals in 125 appearances for Celtic as an attacking midfielder.

Before joining City he scored 46 goals in 166 appearances in Scotland for Motherwell and Celtic, a fantastic record I'm sure we can all agree for a midfielder. Yes people will say the Scottish Premier league is not as good as the EPL but it's certainly a higher standard than league one. Since joining Cardiff, he's scored 1 goal in 50 appearances.

Watching him this season, you wouldn't believe it's the same player that scored all those goals. So what's happened to that attacking midfielder that scored some cracking goals north of the border?

He rarely passes a ball forward, he slows the game down, he rarely gets forward enough to threaten the opponents goal and his attempts on goal are like rocking horse sh1t........but BBM keeps picking him to start which to me means he's happy with Turnbull's performances.

So does that mean Turnbull is playing exactly as BBM has told him to play. Slow the game down, keep the ball at all costs etc...

Turnbull has taken a lot of stick this season on here and other social media platforms, but maybe it's not him that abuse should be directed at........maybe he's only playing the way he's been told to play.

That header he missed is him in a nutshell.

Bagan put in a worldie of a cross, on a plate, with cutlery and HP sauce, and afters (if he wanted them); and he totally fluffed the header. He's the one that is getting into a shoot position, but 19 times out of 20, he doesnt shoot.

I remember the header when watching the game, but in the highlights its a hard watch. You want that player who's putting his nut through the ball. As you can probably guess, it wound me up. :laughing6:

Needs to offer more. He's not really strong in attack OR defence. Very similair to Wintle and its no suprise that their goal was in either/or area with them both absent.

He shouldn’t be anywhere near the squad.

I'm not sure we'll see him play as often now that Robertson is back in the fold.

A couple of cup games now but for the league game at Blackpool I'd prefer to see a midfield three of Robertson and the two Colwills.

I get the criticism of Rubin recently but even when he's played bad this season, at least he is working hard. Certainly doing more running than Turnbull too.

I have been disappointed with Turnbull since he joined to be honest.

As mentioned above, he should have got his header on target at the absolute minimum.

There were moments last season where i thought i saw class, and this would be the manager to unlock him. But, it's more of the same, slow, safe percentage racking, nothing passes.

Not sure what he is good at or what his optimum position is.

He must be the slowest 26-year-old I have seen in the middle of the park, and i watched and aging Marlon Pack for three seasons.

I think BBM likes him because he rarely gives the ball away, but yesterday shows the flaws in his basic premise that if you "x"% possession with a passing accuracy of "y", you'll win.

Just re-watched the goal. Guess who's slow out to Cozier-Dubbery and just turns his back on it.....

Chambers or Roberton put their body on the line in that scenario, in my opinion.

When we signed him, I was excited but also a little curious, he had an excellent record in the SPL but Celtic seemed happy to let him go, and we picked him up without much competition.

Right now, he looks completely devoid of confidence and maybe he was on the slide with them. You could see for the header, he'd already had his head in his hands before making contact.

Around the box, he’s had rebounds and half-chances, but he just looks like a player with zero belief in himself. The one-on-one he blasted over against Burton is another perfect example.

What’s more concerning is that he seems to be getting worse with the ball. Gave the ball away with under hit passes that you just wouldn't expect from him. My biggest issue is the lack of intensity and physicality. He’s far too slow to track runners, and the way he closed down Cozier-Duberry for their winner was inexcusable. The whole week they’d have been talking about him being the danger man, you simply can’t give him that kind of space.

It’s tough to watch a player like him and Osho struggling so visibly with self-belief, but BBM keeps picking him, and it’s definitely affecting our performances.

Both he and Ruban being off it yesterday had a massive impact on our ability to create chances.

To end this rant, based on current form, and even allowing for the wide range of opinions on here, I’d be surprised if any City fans would have him in our best 11.

I know we've done well over the years with Scottish players, but the SPL has drastically declined in quality over recent years, which is why you now currently see Hearts 8 points clear at the top.

I remember Gordon Strachan taking several of his treble winning Celtic team with him to Middlesbrough. Scott McDonald up front, Stephen McManus in defence, Barry Robson in midfield, amongst others. They were an average Championship team, because they were average Championship players.

Now on that basis, we've signed Turnbull from a Celtic team who have continually declined over the past 10 years and Turnbull couldn't even make their starting line up. Celtic were happy to let him go. I think it's fair to say any Celtic player who can't get into their starting line up today, is League 1 standard at best.

Turnbull isn't currently playing well enough for a promotion challenging League 1 team. If we get promoted, he will be nowhere near our team in the Championship. Unfortunately, we will be making a massive loss on him, he will probably go back to Scotland in the future to a Hibs or Aberdeen type of side. He simply isn't mobile or dynamic enough to succeed in this league, unless he either has some hard rnners around him, or we're really dominating possession so he doesn't have to run much.

I also agree above that it was 100% his fault for Bolton's goal. Pathetic attempt to close him down and block his shot. It isn't good enough and he needs to be taken out of the team.
