Salech isn't getting a fair crack at the whip

Sat Oct 18, 2025 10:39 pm

Brian Barry-Murphy:

"I don't think Yousef Salech is getting a fair crack at the whip if I'm honest.

I spoke to the referee before the game. Their interpretation of the law is there have to be excessive and prolonged holding. But he's getting manhandled and no free kick is given to him.

My biggest thing is getting him to evade those challenges, especially close to goal when they can't hold him as long.

But we need to get the ball in the box quicker for him, Robinson and Rubin. I think Rubin is such a big presence that he should be a threat closer to goal than he has been previously."

He’s bloody right. Every game he is constantly fouled and held. What the hell are these referees thinking? It’s so unfair on him

I really don't understand what's going on.

He had his shirt nearly pulled off his back in the second half and the the referee gave a free kick to Reading.

Even more bemusing now we know BBM mentioned it to the referee before the game.

He isn't, but he also initiates a lot of contact as he is static a lot of the time and draws a lot of attention. When Robinson came on he dropped and had less grappling

Thats because when Robinson came on he had an option near him or further forward than him. So he didn't have to grapple and try to hold the ball to get support

When I played footy the rule was if hold its a foul... now its OK as long as its not more than 20seconds inside area! outside its only a foul if striker does it on defender never other way round! If can hold for short time why do refs 99% of time give foul if a player touches arm of opponent and he falls over on purpose?
Rugby tackling is also allowed in area but not outside

If you prevent a player getting to ball in an illegal way its a foul holding is illegal according to rules even for1 second

BBM is spot on with his view we need to get it in the box where they are less likely to hold him. He has that rare ability to evade his marker for a split second if he is not being held. Yesterdays goal being a classic example

Give back what your getting he's to soft at times hardly wins any headers in a 50/50 outside the box or off long kicks, although he would rather complain waving his hands in the air like he's in a boyzone concert with a gang of girls

Get stuck in as refs going to give a foul against you anyway make sure it's a foul because let's be honest anyone at the game yesterday could see that's all they done was try rip his shirt off his back and hands all over him only for reading to get the free kick it happened about 6 times I remember. Awful ref standard in div 1 I've found so far. It's not the first game I've seen the same thing either.

The frustrating part is the consistency. We’ve given away 2 penalty’s for holding/pushing, yet it’s happening back to us and nothing is given.

It’s pot luck if a ref will give anything or not. Their player fell over his own feet in the box and screamed to the ref for a penalty. The falling over shouldn’t be bookable, his reaction afterwards should be.

We should go back the the Kappa style wales shirt years ago, I think AS Roma had them too, the shirt was mega stretchy and makes it no advantage to pull the shirt but more obvious you’re doing it at the same time.
