Boss delivers ‘really bad news’ as Cardiff City star’s season ruined again

Cardiff City striker Kion Etete is set for a prolonged spell on the sidelines as his loan spell at Rotherham United continues to be rocked by injury issues.

The 23-year-old has already missed a chunk of the season due to knee and groin complaints, but has now damaged his quad following a training session for the MIllers in the build-up to the win over Northampton Town last weekend.

News of his latest setback emerged last week, but the extent of the problem wasn't initially known.

It's now been confirmed the striker isn't expected to return to action until Christmas, although it seems there's a chance even that prediction could prove optimistic.

It's looking like it could be two or three months, but it could be longer,” manager Matt Hamshaw told the Rotherham Advertiser. “We're taking as much care of him and giving him as much treatment as we can.

“Unfortunately he's ripped his quad, so not so clever. It's really bad news for Kion individually and also us as a club. We'd managed his match minutes to get him back from his previous injury. It was something and nothing in training.

“I'm gutted for him because he's a great lad. He's come here to try to rejuvenate his career and now he's got an injury, which is sad for all parties.

“When he actually did the injury in training, his speed was at about a 7. That might not mean anything to some people, but you usually get to around a 10 with your speed before an injury. He wasn't even flat-out sprinting
.”

Etete has made just nine appearances since arriving at the New York Stadium in the summer for a season-long loan, a move that was designed to give him more game time following a frustrating stint with City, along with a stint with Bolton Wanderers last season.

Coming here is a massive opportunity for me,” Etete told the Rotherham Advertiser earlier in the season. “I've been saying it for a while. I just need momentum. I need to get to the level I'm capable of and stay there. Building up to that is the toughest part. Sign up to our Cardiff City WhatsApp channel here.

“I've been through a difficult time. When you have injuries and setbacks and can't find your feet and get going, it's hard.

"When you finally start seeing light at the end of the tunnel, you feel more positive.

“Last season, I didn't feel like myself at all, if I'm honest. But I am finding my feet again and getting back to my best
.”

It's now possible he could return to south Wales in January.

Personally, I’m gutted for him, too! It must be soul destroying when he’s trying to get his career back on track!

No doubt, some will slate him for his injury record, but no player wants/deserves this run of bad luck and hopefully he can get it sorted for the new year! :ayatollah:

Yea I totally agree no player sets out to get injured on purpose it's just proper bad luck and I hope etete can go on to recover fully and carve out a decent career wherever that may be

Some players have been out for 2 seasons in premier league before coming back stronger and "cured" of problems.... maybe he's trying to hard to make up for previous injuries criticism is totally unfair!

Time to move him on and off the payroll.

Allan, he’s just at the end of his ‘growing’ stage of life, so maybe it’s all part of that, in a similar way to Rubin Colwill and (seemingly) Dylan Lawlor? :ayatollah:

Chris could well be right.. don't get the unsympathetic comments that it's brought out? As for the contract situation maybe risa had little choice in that if didn't renue his contract tan wouldn't pay a fee for a replacement? Etete has shown hes got something about him but never really got opportunity to show it .... get sorted by end season and fresh start next one... he's got age on his side so plenty of years to prove himself
