Sheffield Wednesday served winding-up order

Thu Oct 16, 2025 12:24 pm

Sheffield Wednesday will "imminently" be served with a winding-up petition over money owed to HMRC.

After an investigation conducted by BBC Radio Sheffield alongside the Sheffield Star, it is understood the Championship club owes £1m.

A winding-up petition would increase the pressure on the club's owner Dejphon Chansiri to sell.

They are already under five separate EFL embargoes after failing to pay wages on time in five of the past seven months.

Wednesday are second bottom of the Championship with six points from nine games after a torrid period off the field, which has left them with a threadbare squad.

The severity of the situation became apparent when May's wages were not paid on time, in the wake of the same thing happening in March.

With uncertainty ongoing and the club placed under various registration embargoes, highly-rated manager Danny Rohl departed in July and his assistant Henrik Pedersen took charge 10 days before the season started.

The team did not play a single pre-season friendly in front of fans and players pulled out of a training match against Burnley after July's wages were not paid.

Fans have organised protests before and during games so far this season and they boycotted the home EFL Cup ties with Leeds and Grimsby, while the supporters' trust also encouraged fans not to buy drinks or snacks in the stadium.

Thai businessman Chansiri, who has owned the club for the past 10 years, has been absent for the entire period and, as yet, no sale has been close.

Indeed, not paying the tax bill is a dangerous game to play. HMRC have got the power to force the sale with vultures like Mike Ashley hanging around.

I heard an interview with the new regulator at the weekend and he said Sheffield Wednesday is one of his immediate priorities.

I expect he'll force Chansiri to sell the club.

Listening to the interview, he said he isn't going to tell clubs what to do day to day but if there's an issue said he'll be ruthless in sorting it out.

Will he? Bet doesn't crack down on premier league and their refusal yo sighn off solidarity payments to efl.. dont understand why they're against realigning parachute payments which is what they're doing! because now clubs are manipulating them to keep them bouncing between premier league and championship..... as for Wednesday if won't interfere with day to day running how can he make owner leave?

Well that's the whole thing Allan, PL could have avoided a regulator being brought in by sorting the EFL payments.

But they didn't and that's the main reason it was decided to have a regulator. Premier League clubs didn't want it because they know things won't always go their way now.

I get that people are sceptical but the regulator and the whole bill will make a huge difference.

Let's hope he does ned! I'm nor really sure of its purpose it smacks of ministerial interference bit like Maggies in the 80s? I saw a bit of what it's about when watched peter crouch series .... I hope its used for good of football
And not ego trip for politicians...

Indeed, and it wasn’t all that long ago (certainly not to us old hands) that we were in the same boat!

The reasons (and how we ‘escaped’ it) are well debated in the years that have passed; but the simple fact was that we were as little as hours away from being ‘wound up’ by HMRC

Likely to force a sale. Very unlikely they'll get wound up and fold. Should be good news for them. Their owner is like Tan on steroids.

Shame they don't go after the lizards in Parliament and the rich and elite with such speed!
