The Wigan red card?

How come it was a red and not a yellow?

I thought that when a pen is given only a yellow card gets issued.

I was surprised he was sent off, maybe the ref was making up for not sending off their player earlier when he scythed down Turnbull (?) when he was already on a yellow & escaped a second one.

Clear red card as we were about to score a goal.and no attempt at playing the ball

Because it's such a clear denial of a goalscoring opportunity, it's still a red card.

Referee may have also believed the defender to make no attempt to play the ball.

There was a similar situation in the Brentford v Man Utd game earlier but the referee just gave a yellow. VAR checked for a red card but stuck with the decision. That's probably just "referee's call" though.

It's only a yellow if a genuine attempt has been made to play the ball, if you just stop someone from trying to score then its a red regardless

He made no attempt to win the ball and was only interested in taking the player out of the equation clear re card
