" Work on new training ground officially stopped "

Mon Sep 22, 2025 12:14 pm

It is understood that work has officially stopped on the construction of Cardiff's new training ground.

The Bluebirds have pledged a new training ground for years but in recent times that deadline has grown nearer. They currently share their Vale of Glamorgan training facility in Hensol with the Football Association of Wales but have insisted that they want to break away and build their own base.

Last August, first pictures emerged of Cardiff breaking ground at Hensol, with diggers already pulling up the turf to begin the development.

It was hoped that the new site would be ready for the 2026/27 season, however the drop to League One ultimately means a reduction in cash flow and the club has had to cut its cloth accordingly, meaning work has been put on hold.

Cardiff have had to prioritise their spending, choosing to plough investment into the academy, which runs at a loss of around £2m but has yielded some incredible and exciting talent in recent years, many of whom now populate the first-team squad.

The Bluebirds will therefore have to train at their current, shared base with the FAW until cash flow improves - i.e. they achieve promotion back to the Championship - and construction can recommence.

Getting promotion won't improve cash flow because its more expensive in championship ....any increase in revenue taken by increased costs.....concentrating on academy is better option at moment

Tan has cut the spending to the bare bones and now this.

Wrong. It does. Quoted by Peterborough's owner of "around 70%".

Pausing a major construction project after relegation is sensible.

Sorry meant promotion won't give you more money to spend due to bigger outlays....
Is posh running costs as big as city's? Don't forget players wages will go up enormously as we've got youngsters on minimum wages for footballing standards...+ stadium costs. yes posh's went up 70% but did relevant costs do same doubt it... but as said academy is more priority than training ground.. and as like you say prudent to halt building after relegation..
And if think there's no difference in running either club? all but 2 championship clubs made losses in previous years you simply don't make money in championship as we know no matter how much club cut costs.

His quote wasn't specific to Peterborough, it was the difference in revenue between L1 and Championship. I tried to find the podcast as it was a brilliant listen. I failed.

Cant say I'm surprised. Its all of Tan's own making but he will have had a terrible shock with preliminary sale offers this summer. The realisation he could walk away with next to nothing no matter how much he puts in from here on. In fact, I had thought he might have us in administration by now. Depending on how the loans to him and Dalman are structured, he could possibly get something back in proportion, he might get less out of selling us as a going concern, which is worrying. At the moment Dalman's getting fully paid out and Tan takes the hit just to off load us. I bet he's kicking himself for keeping the ground within the club though. The start that Murphy has had may have given a change of mind. If we get up he could get a bit more money for the club so may see it as free hit. I cant see him put any money in though. I predict he will have gone one way or another by the start of next season.

Makes sense for Tan to stop spending.

I think he’s hoping we go up on the cheap and he can cash in.

Him building for a future is pointless for him, if he plans to sell up.
