Euro 28 at millennium stadium!

Tue Sep 16, 2025 7:11 pm

Wales will return to playing at Cardiff's Principality Stadium in the build-up to Euro 2028.

Football Association of Wales (FAW) chief executive Noel Mooney confirmed the move to the home of Welsh rugby is on the cards.

Wales will co-host the Euros in three years' time alongside England, the Republic of Ireland and Scotland.

The 74,500-capacity Principality Stadium is set to stage six games – and is being tipped to be the venue for the opening fixture – with Wales guaranteed to play there should they qualify.

The men's national team have only played there once in 14 years, having adopted the smaller Cardiff City Stadium as their regular home.

Mooney says the FAW wants to ensure Wales benefit from "home advantage".

He said: "I think we will have to look at it. To do well at Euro 2028 we need to be used to that environment again, having not played there in a long time.

"Cardiff City Stadium will be our home, but we need – and will look forward to – playing there leading into 2028."
Wrexham on FAW's radar for Wales
Mooney added hopes of more regular games in Wrexham as the Stok Cae Ras continues to be redeveloped by Hollywood owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.

Work on a new Kop Stand, which will meet Uefa requirements and boost capacity to 18,000, is already under way.

The north Wales stadium – the world's oldest international ground still in use – is also set to be one of two venues put forward as part of a UK bid for the women's 2035 World Cup.

Meanwhile, Mooney confirmed the FAW is in talks with partners over a bid for the 2029 Women's Champions League final to be staged at the Principality Stadium.

Hmmmmm... unsure if this is a good move.

Not new news! This has been decided for some time and Cardiff (nee Wales) get the opening ceremony and game, plus some others; but the final will be at Wembley

As long as it's only friendlies at the Principality then I'm fine with that.

But not competitive home games.

The FAW have tried to make Wales play more games there before but have been told by the players time and time again that they prefer CCS.

Ned, to be fair to the FAW, the decision to use the Principality Stadium was a non-negotiable, if Wales were to part-host the 2028 Euros

It’s all down to numbers, as the games are expected to attract large numbers; particularly with the opening ceremony and game being staged in Cardiff

Personally, I don’t think there’s any possibility of a permanent move from the CCS to the Principality Stadium, and hosting such an event in our capital city should be embraced fully :ayatollah:

Agree!

Some decent ‘friendlies’ would help, but hopefully not ‘competitive’ games! :ayatollah:

Way I read it as will play competitive games to get use to stadium! But that doesn't make much sense considering away games are in different stadiums to ccs my fear is it eilllead to what happened years ago games being taken to the 3 grounds as they want Wrexham to host games when upgrading completed... what they're doing is experimenting if worth taking big games back to millennium stadium been hankering to do it for years due to teams success....
I know qualification for 28 as been tweaked to accommodate home nations

If Cardiff would have had some decent backing a few years ago it would still be at the CC Stadium, it would have been a better Stadium than the principality.

It is better! Have you watched football at millennium? View behind goals is poor top row "been there aswell" is just as bad if like looking at ants it's not a football stadium and it shows! But correct about if had the fans we may have expanded more but it is what it is and the experience at ccs is better than millennium even cwith half the crowd.

Mon€y talk$, A££an! Particularly for a UEFA competition; and the Principality didn’t do too badly with the 2017 Champions League!

I was lucky enough to be at that game, and it was electric; with the bonus of Gareth Bale coming on! :ayatollah:
