Team selection rules for Vertu Trophy

Mon Sep 15, 2025 4:45 pm

I didn't know about this rule but looking at the Exeter forum there are team selection rules for the Vertu Trophy (as always, thanks to GrangeEndStar and Sven for the helpful thread below where you can find other League One teams' forums).

The team has to include at least four players that one of the following criteria fit:

- Started on Saturday or will start next Saturday

- On loan from a category one academy

- Have played 40 first team games

I don't know if those players have to start or just be in the squad.

Kellyman is obviously on loan from Cat 1 academy so he would take up one of those places if involved.

4 players from the qualifying rules must be named in the 10 outfield players in the starting lineup

That makes team selection a bit more difficult.

Like I said, Kellyman would take up once place if he starts.

Chambers, Ng, Robinson could be the other three.

It's not really that confusing.

Four of the ten outfield players have to fit one of the following criteria:

- In the top ten players at the club for starting appearances this season

- Played 40+ first team games

- Started the last league game or will start the next league game

- On loan from any PL club or a Category One EFL academy

Hope to see robertson pushed out onto the pitch ,
about time he got involved he played pre season looked totally uninterested, and i don' t know what injury he had, if he had one ? or was it he wanted away ?
did i read murphy had been chatting with him, perhaps it has been kept in house and now he is taking a while to get upto speed but knowing murphy will not pick if they don' t look the part in training.

Monty, Alex had a really bad tackle on him in pre-season at Notts County and that resulted in the injury.

I have a sneaky feeling that he'll be good for us because he knows BBM from Man City so knows what he expects.

This is quite possibly the reason for the somewhat strange team selection on Saturday. NG, Chambers certainly

Why does it make it difficult? I’m confused

Cant see it being a problem. We have 5 players at least who are match fit and have had little game time and in need of a start. Robinson, Chambers, Turnbull, Davies, Ng for starters. Plus there may be a couple who started on Saturday who BBM is considering not playing next weekend anyway -Ashford?

Yes, but the problem that people are concerned about is it restricts BBM ability to put in a team full of youngsters. i.e He is forced to play some first team players when he would like to give them a rest. But as stated there are plenty who need a game anyway.

Any players that starts the previous or FOLLOWING fixture.

I dont understand how you can predict the team for the following game.

Okay so it's not just me that thought it was a strange rule. What if you play someone fully expecting him to play in the next league game & he gets injured in this game & is unable to play for a couple of weeks?

Exactly, you could just say they are all injured.
