Our biggest test yet

Sun Sep 07, 2025 8:00 pm

Is not Stockport. Luton away was a bigger test in my view.

Our biggest test will come when we lose a league game, which we will at some point.

I've seen a few threads on here and people saying things on social media like how many points we'll get, where we'll be at Christmas, will we hang on to these players in January and next summer etc.

To be clear, I'm not having a go at the people who have said those sort of things because I think they're fair questions and I agree with the points being made.

But I think we will learn a whole lot more about this team when we lose.

We are on a roll at the moment but the the reaction to the defeat, when it happens, will tell us more about the mental attributes of this squad (and manager) than any win will.

Of course I hope we keep winning and I'm loving this season so far but when that defeat comes, I will be very interested to see how our squad (particularly the many young players) respond.

It will come with a run of losses.

The flappers and ficklers will be out in force like they did after the Port Vale match.

Port vale was a shocker and rightly so fans critisized it and we have not played like that since, it was a very defensive style which happily has been ditched by murphy.

I am prepared we will not win every game and the only way we are going to go on a bad run is if we compltely change style of play which might warant some complaints but i don' t agree with you that all fans are going to be on murphys back if we loose a game, but if we lost 6 on the trot which i cannot see as we would have had to have changed all our tactics or we play the top 6/7 teams in a row.

I agree Monty, the criticism after Port Vale was fair.

Even the manager said we were lucky to get a point.

I hope when we play port vale at home we put at least 4 past them just to show them a different side of us.

Criticism was fair.

There was a complete over reaction from some quarters.

I remember posting that we would have lost that game last season and there were some very negative over reactive comments.

There will be times we will get found out. Even at this level teams are good at working out tactics and how to play against us. Hopefully BBM will be able to change accordingly.

Nobody is saying any different to you, we all understand how things work we all have the basic knowledge of football tactics by managers etc and i would think 99% of fans know we are not going to win 40 odd games on the trot.

I agree with what has been said - Luton away was our biggest test to date and the Port Vale was a point we gained .

The team is developing mental strength to deal with a few setbacks. A bit of bad luck or one poor decision can always lead to a couple of defeats in a row, and I understand some fans will panic quickly. We’ve seen things unravel before, but this time feels different. I don’t see us going on a serious bad run unless we’re hit with major injury problems.

I think the other potential problem is if we make a change, like dropping Fish for Osho or Ashford for Kellyman, and we don't look as good or they make a mistake, I can imagine some fans will be on their backs quickly.

Or maybe we just beat them?

At least 4. Ffs.

I think the signings of Osho and Trott has given us the experience we've been lacking, which will help the younger players deal with the inevitable drop in confidence and momentum once our unbeaten run comes to an end. I don't see us doing a Mick McCarthy and going on a mammoth losing streak, especially as we are head and shoulders above the majority of teams in this league.

Ned,

Yes we have done very well, But so far only played One Team in the Top 14 Teams.

A lot better and tougher games ahead.

Keep playing as we are and We will do well.

We are putting alot of pressure on ourselves, we would have been better off playing Saturday, we the fans are nervous because we haven't been consistent for so many seasons, now we've got it good we want to stay like that.

You only have to look at the players who didnt start against Plymouth to see we now have the players and experience to deal the odd set back and loads of options. Turnbull, Robertson, Osho, Chambers, Ng, Robinson, Kellyman. Be very surprised if there is another team in this in the league with that sort of back up!!! Everyone of them decent Championship players. And that doesn't include a few promising youngsters like Mafico, plus the older Davies who has already scored twice off the bench

I disagree, as I believe we have the right manager at the right time, and he will instil confidence even in defeat, whilst not allowing standards to drop!

Every player, including captain Calum Chambers, knows they are no shoe-in and others are waiting in the wings for their opportunity! :ayatollah:

That said I do wonder how we will compare to Wrexham and Birmingham last year
