DYLAN LAWLOR DESTINED FOR PREMIER LEAGUE

Fri Sep 05, 2025 3:29 pm

He will play in the Premier League!' - Pundits rave over Cardiff City's new gem
Alex Ridout

Cardiff City youngster Dylan Lawlor made his international debut last night and he was superb.

After a fairly flawless Wales performance against Kazakhstan, 19-year-old Dylan Lawlor has received warm plaudits from legends of Welsh football, including manager Craig Bellamy.

The Cardiff City centre-half made his debut for the Wales senior side yesterday in an assured defensive display, as Lawlor walked away with a clean sheet and man-of-the-match performance which has definitely caught the attention of Welsh fans.

After the match, Wales boss Bellamy was full of praise for the man from Caerphilly.

He said: “I was so impressed with Dylan Lawlor. He was so good.

“We knew it would be hard with the squad withdrawals. Dylan is a big plus from this week… we have gained a player
.”

Bellamy hasn't been the only manager to be praise Lawlor’s recent performances, with Cardiff boss Brian Barry-Murphy also thinking very highly of the teen, as his club tied him down to a new deal.

Barry-Murphy said before it was secured: “I just make my feelings clear to the ownership about how important he is to the club, how we value him and where we see him for the future, and they take care of the rest.”

The emergence of Lawlor has been a real positive among a plethora of green shoots at Cardiff City Stadium so far this season.

And after his performance away in Kazakhstan, former Wales striker Iwan Roberts doesn’t think the talented centre-back will be playing for the Bluebirds for much longer though, despite only making 10 senior appearances for club and country so far.

Roberts said: “He won’t be in League One long.

“He will play in the Premier League. He will have caught eyes with his performances.

“He keeps on getting better. It was a magnificent debut.

The performance earned Lawlor a lot of praise from some of Wales’ 2016 Euro stars too, including fellow centre-back Ashley Williams, Joe Ledley and Sam Vokes.

On BBC Match of the Day, Williams said: “I think we’ll see a lot more of him in the next few games because he’s definitely a Craig Bellamy-type of player.

Ledley added: “I thought he was magnificent. The way he conducted himself, it’s like he’s been in the team for many years.

Vokes said: “He didn’t look fazed one bit. To go out there at 19 years old on his debut is a tough ask, but he can hold his head high.”

Ex-Cardiff and Wales defender Danny Gabbidon also gave his thoughts on Lawlor’s performance, suggesting that the youngster could get better every time he is given an opportunity.

Gabbidon said: “You obviously look at what happened to Cardiff City last season, and it was a difficult time for the club, but sometimes there’s a bit of sunshine after the rain and what we’ve seen is a lot of young players kind of been giving the opportunity this season and Dylan’s one of them.

“He’s still young and he’s only going to get better, you see how well he performed against Kazakhstan, and he’s that type of player you see step to the next challenge, and it just seems really comfortable and easy for them.

“There’s still a lot to learn, but I’ve been really impressed with what I’ve seen from him so far.

Lawlor could be given another chance to show Welsh fans his potential, with Bellamy’s side taking on Canada on Tuesday night in Swansea, though he will have to wait if he wants more World Cup qualifying action, with Wales’ next tie against Belgium taking place during the October window.

Wales will then play Liechtenstein and North Macedonia as their final two games in Group J, in a final push towards World Cup qualification next summer.

I just pray it is with us!

If not, he will command a colossal fee, as I believe the Euro bound clubs will have an interest! :ayatollah:

Said this on another thread but the reality is he will be sold at some point.

Whether we're in League One or the Championship will decide the fee.

Apart from the three or four biggest, every club in the UK is a selling club - including us.

That will never change, whoever the owner is.

How much do you think we should ask for him if a big club comes calling?

A Premier club will come in for him soon.

If we fail to go up we will lose him. Even if we do go up I doubt we will be able to keep him.

If we go up I think we could end up getting him back on loan

I hope as a club we don’t sell him cheap and get done like usual we can all see he is quality. But he will leave at somepoint.
So chuffed he has had his cap for wales and clean sheet. This season it’s good to see the young players being given there chance. The future is bright. But also big clubs will be looking

Now hang on everyone. He has only just started playing for the first team. He is doing well, learning fast and enjoying his football in his hometown club. BBM is coaching him well and there is mutual respect. Let him enjoy his football this year and if we go up a year in the championship will do him no end of good. Why not play Premier football with us? Better this way than sitting on the bench for a club in a higher league and stopping his development

On another thread i mentioned compare mc'guiness who luton payed 10 million for,
then think what lawlor could be sold for, a lot younger plus a lot better than mc guiness if he keeps it up you can double what mc guiness went for, as he is so young in his teens,
but an older head on his shoulder

just glad he signed a new contract

we would probably of lost him in January for peanuts

I think if he carries on like he is we will be selling him come the end of the season whether we go up or not

so the club need to be smart here and not jump at the first big offer
that comes in

he might start a bidding war and drive the price up even higher

I really hope this is how it turns out. The potential with Lawlor is massive though.

My guess is that assuming he continues his progress throughout this season in a similar fashion as it has started, he will leave to join a premiership club by early summer.

If so, I would expect the large fee we should expect will go a long way to pay for better quality players we will certainly need if we are back in the Championship next season.

Unfortunately, it's all a part of life for a lower division club.

Not just the case for lower league clubs, also the case for any club even up to the Premier League apart from the very few biggest clubs.

You only have to look at the situations of Alexander Isak and Marc Guehi this summer. I know Guehi didn't move but all that means is Palace will either get less money for him in January or lose him for nothing next summer.

Every club apart from the very biggest are selling clubs.
