Are we at Risk?

Wed Aug 27, 2025 9:35 am

...transfer deadline day looming.

After such a good start to the season, and some excellent performances within the squad, are we at risk of losing any of our star players?

Rubin Colwill, Salech and maybe even Lawson to name a couple of the important ones...!

I thought this. Rubin specifically.

Would those players mentioned want to leave? It must be refreshing for them to have a manager who believes in them and is giving them the freedom to play.

Whilst I'm sure they find it refreshing, most players will want to play at as higher level as possible. Yes, you'll always get the odd player who will have that affinity with a club and want to stay (Steven Gerrard as an example...local boy, local club etc...) but in most instances players want to progress their career. League One status isn't as good as Championship or lower end Prem.

Hopefully we can keep teams away from our starlets.

I agree with that, but as a young player who has come through the academy and finally getting regular game time, would they swap that to become a bit part player in the Championship.

Possibly they would, but I don't think that would do their career any good long term.

At the start of window, there was talk of our best players leaving but I never saw it happening.

Still don't.

But we have to go up this season because they'll go next summer if we don't.

Well at least with Lawlor signing a new contract in the last few minutes that minimizes the risk on him leaving!

There's a valid argument that our squad value is the highest its been for years due to age and potential. Definately will be come end of the season if successful.

Wouldn't suprise me if Rangers were sniffing around Ruben Colwill, Martin has always admired him.

Russell Martin's days look numbered there already.

Great that he has signed a new contract but doesnt that just protect hus value? Clubs could still come knocking.

Wonder if there is a Price/EPL clause. Hit a certain value from a Prem team and he could still be gone.

Every player has there price and we are league one which isn't great for players wanting to break into Wales team for example as I think bellers will pick championship and prem before league one so players could think of that if offer comes in from higher leagues for them

Fact is that apart from four or five clubs in the UK, every other one is a selling club - including us.

Newcastle are trying to resist it with Isak but even with all their money, they too are a club that will lose their best players to the bigger fish.

Agree with that, although Steven Gerrard wanted out of Liverpool. He was on his way to (then) Chelski, but threats made towards him and his family caused him to renege on the agreed move

Not saying he didn’t have an affinity with his club, but most top players want to win the big trophies by the end of their careers, and we look at the likes of Teddy Sheringham and Harry Kane as examples of that :ayatollah:
