'Swans fan' Saunders: Cardiff are bigger than SwanseaDean Saunders has admitted that, despite being a lifelong Swansea fan, he sees Cardiff City as the bigger club in Wales.
“
If I had the money, I’d buy Cardiff,” the former Wales striker told OLBG. “Definitely. You look at certain clubs and think, ‘I could buy them and turn them into something.’ Cardiff’s one of those.
"It hurts me to say it as a Swansea fan, but Cardiff are the bigger club. They’ve got the bigger fanbase. Both sides are good clubs, but Cardiff’s the capital and that means they can attract the best players.”
However, the 61-year-old says off-field issues have too often held the Bluebirds back.
“
The problem comes when things go wrong in the boardroom. It filters down onto the pitch, and before you know it everyone’s got an excuse. That’s how Cardiff have ended up in League One, and it’s tragic for Welsh football.”
Despite his allegiance, Saunders insists he supports all Welsh clubs in their own way.
“
The only one I haven’t been involved with is Newport. I’ve even helped Merthyr out. I once took a Wrexham team down there because they couldn’t afford to turn the floodlights on. They needed £700, so I took a side down and they beat us 2-0. I was fuming!"
