What has changed with Rubin Colwill?

Mon Aug 18, 2025 6:33 pm

Rubin Colwill has two league goals this season.

His best goals return was in 2021/22 when he scored five. Safe to say he'll beat that, barring injuries.

I accept it's a division below that we're in but his whole performance level has improved drastically so far so this season.

So what is it?

Is it the responsibility of being vice captain?

Is it because a manager finally values him?

Whatever it is, long may it continue.

I think bbm has made him the main man given him extra responsibility and now he's thriving and looking the player we all hoped he would be, I think he will go from strength to strength and wouldn't be surprised if he scored double figures this season

I do think that's a factor, Chris.

You have to remember that this manager helped make the likes of Cole Palmer make him what he is today.

He clearly has the abilities as a coach to make players better and I do believe he has made Rubin better, whether that's through giving him confidence or how to play.

His work rate has improved massively, that's the most pleasing thing for me because he's always had the talent and skill

Look at his coaches since mad mick

Morison- pretend progressive football, clueless
Hudson- no idea what he was doing
Lamouchi- Just needed results, no time for rookies/kids
Bulut- The most negative manager for a very long time, zero risk/reward
Riza- youth team coach with no idea in the big boys group
Rambo- Still a player with no coaching experience

Now we have a coach who had a crack in L1/L2, failed and then went to the modern football university of Pep. Wants to develop his own variant and coaches Rubin within an inch of his life. Rubin has found a coach who suits his attributes and skillset. I also think if you don't fit the blueprint you'll be gone.

BBM seems to have made a system and wants to fit square pegs in square holes. Last game we kinda started to see it click.

Colwill looks fitter and is better tracking back aswell I noticed

He's had a full pre-eason first time in about 3 years and stopped growing.
Now we will reap the benefits of his talent.

The right manager.... even Harry Wilson was made to look average with the clowns we've had.

And he's a late developer. He had a huge growth spurt after he was 18.

He will rip this league up this year if we can keep hold of him.

He looks far fitter this season. How many sprints did he make in the last game?

As soon as Rotherham kicked off the game, he sprinted straight at their player to close him down.

He's being played regularly too, so he's getting proper minutes to improve his match fitness and all round general play. It's far easier for him to get into a rhythm, especially with the way we're playing controlling possession.

Rubin would not have scored his free kicks last season because he wouldn't have been played to his strengths, he wouldn't have been played regularly enough to get into a rhythm and his confidence wouldn't have been as high. He said he fancied the free kick against Peterborough because he scored a good one in pre season.

Finally, the manager and what goes on at the training ground has had a massive influence. BBM has got Rubin playing his best football and long may it continue.

He is transparent when we play attacking football. This high press game is suiting him. BBM can take credit for that.

He loves having space and in this league he will get it. He was starved of that in the Championship.

Better fitness helps.
In the home matches this season we have had majority possession which helps.
He is putting far more effort closing down the opersition when we lose possession.
In addition, he is being used in a more advanced roll often alongside Salech when we have possession which will lead to more goal scoring chances.
All these factors have improved him as a player.

Style of play, belief, trust, good tactics! And just letting him play his game and not constantly on his back

He's been more consistent in the first 4 games than any 4 games ever before, that's the difference and you have to credit BBM for that, we've all said that was what he needed to do & that the ability has always been there.

A manager who believes in him and knows how to manage him he’s always been a good player in my eyes but I think without him we would struggle
