Yellow cards

Sun Aug 17, 2025 8:36 pm

This is something I'm a little worried about.

We have picked up six yellow cards in three league games.

Bagan has been booked in all three games and two away from a ban.

Hopefully we can find a way to avoid picking up too many cards.

I suspect if an analysis was done on yellow cards per % possession against on Man City, it'd be pretty high. That's where BBM has learnt his trade.

He will know if we're retaining high levels of possession, the danger to us is on the break. Take the yellow card, break down the attack, and set up again.

Unfortunately, this season has already shown we're going to have a far lower standard of officiating. We did two tackles in the first half where we cleanly took the ball, which the ref gave as a foul. The ball completely changed direction when the City player touched it, so how I could see that from the stand, with the ref far closer on the pitch missing it, was beyond me.

I think a mixture of poorer officiating, our higher pressing and away games with the opposition trying to rough us up to stop us, will mean we will get more bookings. I'm just pleased Bagan wasn't sent off at Port Vale, as although I thought he cleanly got the ball first and only caught their man with the follow through, people thought he was lucky not to get a red.

This is another reason why our current squad is far too small and BBM needs to be backed to bring in a minimum of 5 new players.
