BBM ON ‘CHAMBERS TO WREXHAM’ TALK

Sun Aug 17, 2025 1:09 pm

Brian Barry-Murphy expects club-captain Calum Chambers to stay, amid reports Wrexham were interested in the defender.

BBM:

Brian Barry-Murphy says he expects Calum Chambers to be at the club this season.

Asked if he thought the former Arsenal man would be here for the season, he replied "absolutely".

“As far I am concerned he is our player and unless I hear otherwise he remains with us.”

“I have heard nothing regarding him leaving.”

The head coach also issued an update of sorts on incomings, playing a straight bat saying he expected no movement before Tuesday night's game against Wimbledon. "Based on my previous experience, nothing," he said, with a shake of the head.

Barry-Murphy added that he was thankful for players like Chambers and Callum Robinson for being experienced heads among a young squad navigating its way in the third tier - appreciating that being named among the substitutes won't have necessarily sat well with the duo.

If he stays he has to be used as a number 6 to compete with king and Wintle, we need to allow fish and Lawlor to settle in and form a partnership and understanding

Chambers speculation batted away
By Mathew Davies

Brian Barry-Murphy says he expects Calum Chambers to be at the club this season despite reports linking the centre-back with Championship side Wrexham.

Barry-Murphy, though, says any transfer speculation is news to him.

"I've heard nothing," the boss said in response over whether there had been any interest in the defender.

Asked if he thought the former Arsenal man would be here for the season, he replied "absolutely".

I was a bit worried that BBM seemed to be suggesting post match yesterday that he might change the defence around depending on the opposition.

I think it's vital especially at the back to build up an understanding between the defence as a unit and not keep chopping and changing.

Also, if you've played well like both Fish and Lawlor did yesterday I don't think you should be dropped for the next game - that surely must be damaging to confidence and morale.

I'm sure that most successful teams don't change their basic first team regularly - take "tinkerman" Ole Gunner Solskjaer for an example as to why that rarely works.

Personally I will be very disappointed if Chambers starts again on Tuesday - unless it's as a holding midfielder but even then that would mean dropping somebody who doesn't deserve it after yesterday's performance.

Chambers can play a vital role this season in what is a promising but inexperienced and paper thin squad. He can play defensive midfield, centre half and full back. This could be so important as injuries, suspensions, lack of form, tiredness ( 6 of yesterdays squad are likely to be on Wales duty for full team or u 21, Robinson may be in Eire squad and Salech could find himself in the Denmark squad) etc take their toll. And the players obviously respect him as they wanted him captain.

I do feel like they are just signing anyone with championship experience and not really thinking whether they suit a style of play. I think they will do well to stay up if they stick with Ward in goal and Parkinson who has struggled at that level in the past

The more I think about it, I think they'll probably stay up.

But that's because I don't see Parkinson making it to Christmas. He's done exceptionally well to take them this far, but like you say he has always struggled when it comes to the Championship.

They've made some strange signings and have overpaid but I don't see them in the relegation mix.
