Referee - marks out of 10

Sat Aug 02, 2025 10:27 pm

New for this season, following a suggestion on the thread I did about possible improvements to the match thread.

What would be your marks out of 10 for today's referee?

I would say 5. First half he was dreadful and not much better in the second half.

Seemed to guess a lot.

My initial thoughts were that he was ‘showing the big boys he was in charge live on TV’, but I gave him 4/10 because whilst his first-half performance appeared very bias towards The Posh, where he awarded them a ‘benefit of the doubt’ penalty, and booked three of our players versus none from the opposition, he did improve in the second half and was a lot more balanced

He's lucky I gave him a 2 only because I have sausage fingers and I was ment to press 1. Absolutely dreadful yesterday ref was. He couldn't keep up with the speed of play either just awful he was for me.

I gave him a 3 The pen I thought was a correct decision However apart from that the number of times we out muscled them and he gave a free kick was amazing.
He was slow and not up with play One of his poor decision went out way as Lawlor should have been off.

Absolute gash. The amount of times Salech was wrestled to the floor and nothing but we only needed to look at them the wrong way was ridiculous.

Fitness OK, consistency poor, positioning average, man management OK at times.

I agree He looked to show his authority but theres plenty of ways to do it rather than tell the big boys in their own back yard 'you dont influence me'.

Not being influenced should be a given, not something you set out to prove.

Did you watch on TV or in ground? As where I was it looked no way a penalty

Can you explain how that was a penalty??? He nicked the ball away from the striker. . Have you seen a replay?

In the replay i saw he did not touch the ball and looked a penalty all be it a soft one I would have been disappointed if city were not awarded it

The panel on tv stated it was a pen as well at Halftime

His biggest error was giving the penalty, which shouldn't have been.
Never easy without VAR.
We have the benefit of replays and without this, from his angle it possibly looked a pen.
Thank God it didn't affect the three points in the end.

I’ll give him higher marks for not giving Lawlor a second yellow when he should have for that challenge on the edge of the area just before the penalty.

If we had gone down to 10 it would’ve changed the game and we may not have got the 3 points

I haven't watched the TV version of it to comment. So all I can say in ground it was very much outrage. And no player reactions from Peterborough made it seem even more harsh

That's a fair point. Can look different where your viewpoint is.

Saw it in slow motion at ground and whilst I was dubious the problem for ref was city player put foot forward towards ball not sure he actually touched it.... the player had nowhere to go but over city's player leg ....how many pens we've seen in similar circumstances loads! I've no doubts var would have overturned it. but tv and var are hindsight views not refs.

I gave him a 4 as he improved a little in the second half but the penalty decision was awful.

I must get different commentators here because the ones on my feed said that there was no way it was a penalty.

I felt that he was very quick to give city players cards for fouls that he wasn't carding the equivalents of.

I felt the game got quite impetuous towards the end because he wasn't penalising then as harshly as he should have.

I didn't understand the Lawlor yellow, thought it was harsh.

Even more so after he didn't book the Peterborough defender who fouled Joel Colwill for the Rubin free kick goal, I thought that was a yellow card if the others were.

I gave him 5, thought he was too much in the limelight, a good referee would hardly be noticed.

I think this is an excellent idea. Is there any chance of working out the average points awarded to each referee so that at the end of the season, we can see who is the overall best?

Yes, will factor that in.

As a former FA of Wales and Welsh Premier Referee I felt that he was very inconsistent throughout and I im in no doubt that the match delegate would have made that clear during his post match brief
His decision making was all over the place, yellow carding for one offence and then just a quiet word for a similar offence committed by the Posh players
I think the occasion got to him and he tried to prove that the hostility shown to him by our fans wasn’t going to faze him. It wasn’t a great start to the season for him and I’m sure he’ll benefit from the experience of refereeing in front of a crowd of almost 20,000 and not the usual league 1 or league 2 crowds he’s been used to.
