" Captain to be announced on Friday "

Thu Jul 31, 2025 10:40 am

Is it a deliberate decision to get Yousef Salech to do media today?

Brian Barry-Murphy:

"No. There's no hidden agendas there. Ideally we would have had the captain here, but we’re going to be announcing the captain tomorrow along with the squad."

I'm guessing chambers

Reading between the lines in the press conference then my guess would be Chambers, Robinson or Salech.

It definitely won’t be Salech unfortunately, BBM said we would have ideally wanted the captain here, Salech was there…. So it isn’t him.

I’m guessing chambers or Robbo.

I think it will be chambers, but the outside bet is rubin as there was talk a few weeks ago he might be given it

Why doesn't he just announce it now? Why create further uncertainty?

Could we have a surprise new signing tomorrow who will be announced as our new captain?

Chambers...pretty good

Wintle was a great Captain under Bulut when he stepped up for Ralls, I’d be happy with him

Got more experience than most in this squad

It's his way of managing things and people should respect that - he's the manager.

He's taken the decision to tell the squad who the captain is tomorrow so it would be wrong to tell the media and fans before that.

The fact you've posted that just proves my point that you will go after him for anything you possibly can, before the season has even started.

Quite sad that that's some fans mindset.

My choice hes a decent workhorse, who players will respect . He can play in multiple positions.

NG a decent shout if you want reds .

Wintle ??

Keeper if he's gobby and a nutter.

I'm not even sure we have any leaders in the team yet so the longer he takes the better. Wintle is the player most expect to be named captain, pretty slim pickings at the moment though.

I think it has to be Chambers....experience he has. We are lacking a natural leader which I was hoping one would have been signed. Personally would have kept Ralls on a reasonable contract as Club Captain...

Chambers has played at the very top level and is a leader.

Wintle has captained Championship games.

Alnwick, although unlikely to be first choice, has been a captain.

Robinson has a wealth of experience and has also played at PL level. Young players look up to him.

So I totally reject the idea that we don't have any leaders. It's a myth that seems to have been said a lot this summer.

You can reject it all you like but nobody stepped up last season & all went down with a whimper. Just because they've played lots of games in higher leagues doesn't make them a leader.

I mentioned Wintle but I think Chambers might be a better bet. Robinson could captain an arm waving team, not sure about a football team as he's great when winning but not so much when we go behind, if he's who the youngsters look to then we're already in trouble. Never been a fan of keepers being captains as they're usually far away from any dodgy decisions & the action.

So much talk about last season but there were very clearly mitigating factors such as having three managers over the season and the players clearly didn't enjoy their football.

It's obvious the players are enjoying their football again now, from both what they say and how they look.

When that happens, more players will step up and lead.

I can understand why you might think that's not the case because some people on here are determined to depress us all.

I disagree (and agree with Welshman in CA) - I don't see 1 leader out of those combined; as demonstrated the majority of last season.

Ralls or O'Dowda were the two I'd have given it to.

It's a gap and a requirement if we have ambitions of promotion.

I've covered my opinion on last season in another post on this thread so won't repeat it.

I strongly disagree but I guess we'll see who's right as the season goes on.

I haven't gone after him at all. I've asked the question if the reason he isn't announcing it until tomorrow is because we could possibly have a new signing as our captain. You said we will have an exciting week for signings, so I'm expecting 3 or 4 new players to be announced tomorrow based on what you've said.

I posted something from what was said on Twitter, so it wasn't me saying there would be signings this week. That was very clear in the thread. I haven't edited the thread at all, so look again and see for yourself. You're just twisting the facts, as usual.

You've literally just criticised BBM for not announcing the captain 24 hours earlier than he will, so I struggle to see how you're not going after him.

I agree with most of your posts on the football side of things.
Like you, I’m behind BBM and I’m feeling positive also, like you, the posters on here constantly grinding everything down to a level of utter negativity gets on my nerves.

But, I don’t believe we have a natural leader in the squad at the moment.

You don’t necessarily need a ‘blood & guts’ captain like the old days but if you look back at previous captains like Kavanagh, Hudson, Morrison & Ralls I don’t think we’ve got anyone who comes close. Obviously throw in guys like Bamber RIP, Flint and a few others also.

Robinson who comes across as a bubbly and talkative guy around the dressing room would be a disaster on the pitch imo.
Just leaves Chambers or Wintle I think.

Yeah can only be chambers or wintle as captains. Both for me are not natural born leaders.

Sorry Robinson is absolutely not a captain and Rubin neither
