Rubin Colwill says: "I'm really enjoying it"

Wed Jul 23, 2025 5:18 pm

Rubin Colwill:

“I’m really enjoying it. They’ve got me working really hard in tough sessions, and we’ve done well in these games as well.

“I got the ball on the half turn and saw Isaak making the run, the defender covered it up so I just cut inside and shot!”

“From the first day, Brian has demanded high intensity. The physical outputs need to be higher so we’ve been working really hard on that.

“The clarity of what he wants us to do is there, and we’re all getting into that good condition to get it right.

“I’m feeling really good. The intensity has gone up compared to what we’ve probably been used to from the last couple of years, so it’s been a bit of adaptation for us all, but I think we’ve all had the conditioning from training, we’ve adapted to it well. It’s come together nicely for us all, really.”

“We’ve got that understanding of each other, when to run off each other and timing is key, really. We’re giving each other space and creating opportunities for each other, which is great.

“The positional understanding that we all share is making things easier for us as we play more together.”

“I felt like I was back in the U16 side today rocking up to play at a playing ground, so it’ll be nice to play in front of fans again on Saturday! It adds that extra bit of bite to a game, and that’s the special thing about football, so I can’t wait.”

That's really positive, it does sound like things have been far too easy over the last three or four seasons, and that we will be a lot fitter and well-drilled this season.

I find it telling that he says the intensity has gone up which reading between the lines says ‘we were not very fit last year’ which smacks of bad management and players not being demanding enough of each other.. why is that? A lack of leadership amongst senior players?

It's down to coaching staff to build the fitness levels of players over pre-season. If that doesn't happen, it's very difficult to build the levels back up during the season due to the amount of games that are being played. Players can only follow how the coaches tell them to train. We have had, at best, below par fitness levels for the last few years and that's down to the coaches.

But I prefer to look forward and not back so, as others have said, it's good to see that the fitness levels appear to be very high now.

Riza was in charge last year who was clueless in all departments hence the mess we where in fitness, confidence, tactics, the bloke was shocking absolutly shocking and in the end looked like someone from a victorian asylum unkempt appearances wild staring eyes i think he lost the plot eith the pressure.

I agree and it’s great that we are looking sharper and fitter now, but I was speaking to someone who is well connected at Villa and he was saying how John McGinn as a senior player sets the standard and is demanding of others.. do we have someone like that?!
