Rangers are looking into signing young Cardiff City striker Jack Sykes.
Sykes, 16, has now joined the Bluebirds’ under-18 side as a scholar but the Glasgow club are admirers of the youngster and could move to sign him.
Sykes caught the eye of clubs after netting a hat-trick against Wigan for the under-18s side last season. He also scored a hat-trick for the under-18s in a friendly against Exeter on Saturday.
He played a key role in helping Cardiff’s under-17s to the Professional Development League Cup final last season, where they were beaten by Shrewsbury, and scored 29 goals for Cardiff’s youth teams across the last campaign.
Cardiff are reluctant to lose one of their brightest young prospects but but it is believed Rangers would be able to sign the striker for a reduced cross-border compensation fee.

Ned. There are those that say "age is just a number".
Do you think he is the sort of player who could perhaps be fastracked to the first team squad
Not necessarily a regular but someone who can be introduced gradually. A sort of regular substitute.

Depends how good he is right now. I don't know because I've not seen him play.
Rangers probably after him because of his potential. They know they can get him for a small compensation fee too, something we have no control over because more than likely and independent tribunal would decide the fee - it wouldn't be much.

We need to offer him a pro contract ASAP.
Even if its only £1000 a week we will get that back if ever he's sold.

agree, we need to get out of the habit of letting young talent get poached so easily,
I know it happens at most clubs but a lot of clubs protect certain players by giving them senior contracts just so they can get a more significant fee for them when the inevitable happens
which is something we never seem to do until they reach the age of 19-21

I know Billy Gilmour left Rangers in similar circumstances and the cross border fee was around £400K. Not sure if you can add a sell on clause. .

Sounds like the sort of player we should be keeping, good about the new contract.
If he keeps doing well then maybe it would be worth giving him a game in the Vertu Trophy or something.

Agree and that's the way to go with these young players - sounds like some of the others will be given a chance this season .

He must be at least 17 years old to sign a professional contract.
