VOTE: THIS SEASON’S CAPTAIN?

Sun Jul 13, 2025 8:59 am

I know many are hoping we bring in a new leader/general seasoned lower league player who could easily be made the new captain, but if that doesn't materialise who do you think will be the new captain out of the current squad ?

Robinson for me. He a winner had high expectations the younger ones clearly look up to him and he wants the best for them.
Probably won’t always be fit so would need a good back up.

I don’t think he’s the right mould for captain.

Injured far too often and not exactly known for being a hard worker.

I get that and don’t disagree. But I think he offers so much in other aspects that going unnoticed in the game. I think he’s the best option from what I seen, so maybe it’s screaming we need to recruit a proper leader. That said i only see them for 90 mins on game mode and bits and bobs now and then. There’s more to be a captain that I don’t see at the training ground or team talks.
Who’s your shout roath?

That is a pitiful list when you think about it, no wonder we got relegated.

I’ve voted Wintle out of those purely because he’s just got a bit more about him - but in all honesty, none of them.

In an ideal world we would have a bruiser in the number 6 role who’s vocal, not scared of 50/50s - someone a bit nasty.

To be fair wintle was in my thoughts as well.

It has to be Wintle, with Salech as vice for me.

I'd be surprised if Robinson and Chambers are still here on September 2nd. I can't see too much demand for them, but they are a good addition to championship squads, and I doubt either is enjoying L1 salaries, especially at this stage of their careers.

Salech appears to be a bit of a character I just have a feeling he has found his club. Its going to click!

I think our leadership problems stemmed from the senior and football management rather than just the players. I don't think BBM is their mate like Riza or their enemy like Bulut. He is respected within the game, and the "name-dropping" for these kids must impress them. I bet he can compare data on the gangly kid from Citeh to Rubin, and so on. He is not a fraud.

To me, it's clear the leader of our club is BBM and we haven't had that since Warnock.

Shows that with 7 players already having votes that we do not have a clear player of captain material in the squad as yet

Good question, and I’ve added a ‘new arrival’ option, as I believe BBM will bring his own man in to do that job

However, if that wasn’t to happen, I think we need a ‘work horse’ player that role to gee up the team and cajole them into doing their jobs; a bit like John McGovern did for Brian Clough’s teams (apologies to the younger element on that one)

My personal choice of the current group would be Ryan Wintle, as he has aggression, not afraid to speak out (as he did with Bulut) and will be a huge asset, if controlled right :ayatollah:

I believe we need to bring someone in to be Captain.

I said the other week there was chatter that rubin could be given the captains roll and I noticed he was given the captaincy for the first half yesterday

My choice if the squad stays as it is would be Salech, he just seems to get what it means to play for cardiff and you can see he has leadership qualities, we also need our captain to be someone who is a guaranteed starter when fit

Ian, I just added a ‘new arrival’ option

Apologies to those who had already voted, I didn’t realise adding a new option would re-set the vote completely. Lesson learned :ayatollah:

I believe captains in modern-day football are for coin tosses and photos.

We lack leaders but that stems from Tan and cascades down. I have a feeling that BBM will quickly move out the quitters, a fair few have already gone but quitting is contagious.
What Warnock did well was recruit non-quitters, but over three to five year early career you can identify those types, its difficult with youngsters.
Will this be the year where Rubin wakes up and realises how close he is, his brother looks like he has an edge. I like Bagan I think he is a lot tougher than he looks, is Robertson going to kick on from a mediocre start?

The one I worry about are Willock, Tanner, Robinson and Rubin who all seem to collapse when its not going well. But, Rubin is showing main man vibes, so i am getting excited

I went wintle only because he might raise his own game with the responsibility and he' s,
a steady eddy

I would pick Wintle out of that list, however I think BBM will bring in someone possibly in midfield or in defence doesn't have to be at centre back. Watching yesterday's game I thought Lawlor and Fish played well together, but I do think we need another centre back for cover, Bagan has played there and we have Daland but he does seem a bit weak. Was he injured yesterday?

Of the players at the club, it has to be Wintle.

But I would prefer it to be an incoming player.

The whole idea of the post was if we didn’t bring anyone in as per the op, i had deliberated whether to put that option in or not and remembered a few comments that maybe we wont spend anything until the sale is confirmed one way or another, therefore only leaving us with what we have.

Of that list it would be Wintle. I think recruiting one and a few other leaders is important but not sure what position we could sign that would be guaranteed to play every gam which I feel a captain needs to.

Shame we sold Mark McGuinness as he would’ve been a no brainer for me. Saw he captained Luton a few days ago.

Personally, I think the role of ‘team captain’ in any sport is modernly undervalued. The drive and inspiration a ‘good’ captain can have is huge and can make up gaps in a players commitment/ability

I mentioned earlier the importance of John McGovern to Brian Clough’s teams and he was the driving in-field factor to two First Division (now Premier League) titles with Derby County and Nottingham Forest, as well as two successive European Cup (now Champions League) wins with a Forest team that really came out of nowhere in a bigger ‘smash and grab’ than the Leicester City team of 2016

I also see the value of a ‘Club Captain’, who whilst not be a regular first teamer, would have the respect and value of those around him, to be the driving force and (sometimes) ‘fixer’ behind the scenes

I recall one of my favourite players of years gone by, Richie Morgan. An excellent centre half who was with the Bluebirds for several years. He was ‘Club Captain’ (not team captain) for most of his time here. He only played 80-odd games but he was a class act off the field, and bonded that squad of proper characters together

He often coached my junior football team, so I saw his value even at a young age :ayatollah:

Wintle???? Now that has spun me out.

New arrival for me, none showed leadership last season.

Not sure Wintle will play that much no one stands out so far, but I suppose BBM and his team will have a better insight into who the stronger characters are, possibly Chambers if he's going to play many games, if not, hopefully we're looking to sign one.
