o/t - an appeal to dog owners

Sat Jul 12, 2025 9:51 am

Hi y'all.

In this smashing hot weather, keep you dogs INDOORS please, preferably with a fan in the room they are in.

Walk them early doors before it gets too warm, if you can get your lazy arse out of bed that is, and later on at dusk. If it means foregoing a pint at the pub then so be it.

The amount of times I have had to pull over and harangue dog owners at 1,2 and 3pm this week, for walking their dogs in blistering heat is unbelievable.

As it's already been said, try walking on hot coals with three fur coats on in 80 degree heat yourself if you want to know what a dog feels like in this heat, plus it can be fatal for them if they get heatstroke.

I have 2 cockapoos, and I would rather keep them in a day or 2 than risk their health/lives. No dog ever died from not having a walk for a day.

And dont get me started about dogs in hot cars with windows up. No hesitation from this citizen in smashing the windows through if I come across this.

Rant over.

Well said that man, I have a cockapoo and a Springerpoo. The former hates the heat, the latter loves it in short bursts. Fans are on, paddling pool is full of coldish water. It makes my blood boil. My wife works in a vets, and they have had a 500% increase in dogs this week with dehydration, sadly 3 of them are no longer with us.

I think the people of this forum are better than that mate.
There’s lots of things you shouldn’t do why not list them as well?
Very patronising.

Yes totally agree with Jumanji. I have a 7 year old dachshund who had spinal surgery last week

We filled a few plastic bottles with water and put in freezer - then wrapped them up in a towel to rest on.

Also those zipper freezer bags are good. 1/4 fill them and put in freezer and you are left with a flat ice pack to cool him/her

Sorry did I mention the people on this forum? No.

It was a general observation, not a dig at individuals here. Sounds like you have a guilty conscience mate.

If the cap fits and all that...not patronising at all. It's common fecking sense.

I notice other replies are supportive.

Sucks to be in a minority don't it?

Nothing wrong at all with you thinking of the animals just as a reminder to all owners well done budd
I help out at dog rescue and have to go to places to rescue neglected animals especially from the drug gangs not nice environments and places to go and it would make your blood boil how cruel some animals are treated its f.cking hot so some people need to chill.

Well you posted it here so who are you reminding then? Mumsnet.
You forgot to tell us all not to let our dogs cross busy road on our own. To keep them on leads when near wild life or live stock. To prepare they food for them not expect them to do it.
The list is endless.
What else do I need reminding to do?

Well, I could remind you to get a life. But I think that's beyond you.

Who’s yanked your testicles this morning?

Just an informative post, you’d be surprised how many will still walk their dogs in this heat. All you got to do is touch the floor with your hand and you’ll feel how hot it is.

Seems you come across aggressive in a lot of topics.

I agree with Jonesy-Valleyboy in that the original post, although mostly right does have a patronising feel to it, specifically this....

"Walk them early doors before it gets too warm, if you can get your lazy arse out of bed that is,, and later on at dusk. If it means foregoing a pint at the pub then so be it."

It's almost suggesting nobody looks after their dogs quite like the OP and the rest of us just sleep in late and prioritise pints over the safety of our dogs.

The rest though I agree with, as do the vast majority of intelligent dog owners fortunately.

This Jonesy-valleyboy27 seems to be antagonising people with his comments on a daily basis. He's only been on the forum for a few months and gives it big licks. Probably a young keyboard warrior

I have a 2 year old doberman and he would love to lay around in the sun all day. Known to be good at regulating their body temperature but there's no way he's out walking in this.

So many golden retrievers and cockerpoo being walked around us, poor dogs

Excellent post to remind us all how to look after our dogs. Who are the two help ends making petty comments about it like pls remind me about what else I should be doing, and making comments about jokes about getting out of bed etc. Well done mate for posting!

What does age have to do with it?
Can’t I be an old keyboard warrior.
Do you actually have any evidence to back this up that I antagonise people daily? Or do I just have different opinions to you and you can’t handle it?

It is your right. But as a responsible dog owner. I HAVE TO WALK MY DOG WHEN IT GETS COOLER I PREFER TO WAIT FOR THE SUN TO GO DOWN AS ITS STILL REALLY HOT.
Do you agree?

He clearly craves the attention, probably didn't get enough of it from mummy and daddy when he was a child.

Completely. I will allow you to stay up past your bedtime to walk your dog. I wait for the sun to go down too. Just been to Cosmeston actually and they enjoyed a cool swim too - in the safe part of the lake not the main part.

Now now. Calm down. I assumed that any one that has the honour of having a dog would do they best to care for the dog and should be responsible enough to know what to do to care for it to the optimum.
Maybe the the OP was right to post it as appears you weren’t aware and needed this guidance, if that’s correct you shouldn’t be allowed to have one.

What’s with the insults anyway?
