Barry Murphy: “Rubin Colwill / Eli King & Callum Robinson”

Tue Jul 08, 2025 11:14 am

Barry-Murphy wants to implement.

In Spain:

In one small-sided game, Rubin Colwill loses the ball and doesn't attempt to win it back quickly enough, which prompts a loud bark from manager Murphy.

"Press it, Rubin! Press it, Rubin!" instructed Barry-Murphy. "Not dynamic enough on the turnover, press it!

Even the attention to detail when King, who is likely to enjoy Barry-Murphy's style of play, picked the ball up on the half turn before whipping it into space was evident.

"Kingy, Kingy, Kingy, good body shape, let's go!" the head coach shouted encouragingly from the sideline.

Another positive snippet was seeing Callum Robinson in full flow.

The Republic of Ireland international did not partake in much of the pre-season schedule before meeting up with the squad in Murcia, however he was front and centre during much of the shooting drills, finding the back of the net with regularity.

The striker is someone who will be viewed as a big asset, especially in League One, a level he should be too good for, and if Cardiff have designs on forcing their way into the top two this season, someone with his skillset, experience and knowledge of where the back of the net is will be very useful.

Whether he is part of the squad of the game on Wednesday night or whether Barry-Murphy will opt to wait for Saturday's clash with Southend to give him a run-out remains to be seen.

The only other senior players not on the pre-season trip are Perry Ng, who hurt his knee during the first day of pre-season training and is expected to be out for five weeks, thus missing the start of the season, and Jak Alnwick.

Alnwick, it's understood, has suffered a back spasm and will be out for a couple of weeks

This is good, sounds like he's really working hard to get his point across to the players.

I've had my issues with Rubin but he does have the ability. I think he's someone who needs constant coaching/encouragement to do well in match play and it sounds like that's what BBM is doing.

Rubin has the ability, needs a rocket up his arse every game

His problem isn’t his ability. It’s his commitment to off the ball stuff. Very half hearted when it comes to pressing, tackling and blocking

A common theme amongst fans about Rubin.
One of our most talented players with the ball, but one of our more lazy players without it.
I hope this manager can fix this major problem as I think he could be a major player in the coming season.

Nevertheless, I have also noticed that a few fans have no time for him either!

Agree, Ned. He’s clearly no mug when it comes to the technical side, and we’ve all moaned about a lack apparent effort ‘off the ball’ from Rubin and some others. Let’s hope this is a positive sign that BBM really does know what he’s doing and can transfer that onto pitch during a match

A fit Callum Robinson will be a big asset this coming season, as will Salech, and I’ve said before that I rate Eli King, so hopefully this will be his season to make the grade with regularity :ayatollah:

I think it's quite obvious now to play in a bbm side you have to run run and run some more he won't accept passengers

I'm fairly sure we will see the fittest cardiff side in a fair while

I really think rubin could rip this league apart with the right coach behind him, could this finally be his year

We've all been patiently waiting for this to happen with Rubin & some have less patience than others with the wait but he keeps proving the doubters right & the believers wrong. Maybe league 1 is his level & BBM is the manager he needs because we all want him to succeed so badly.

Just randomly watched the 5 nil drumming of Plymouth last season. Rubin absolutely run the show that day, he was unplayable. He just needs to click with a manager.

If BBM can motivate and man manage him, he'll be a hell of a player at league 1 level.

That game also made me think how the f&%k did we get relegated...but we won't go there anymore.

If we have to rely on King we are doomed

He’s hardly impressed anywhere he’s gone

alot of our goals conceaded last season was rubin picking up the ball from centre halfs and losing it in our own half and we usually concead i know its not just one player but i find him very frustrating other teams under bulet and especially riza worked us out because we did the same thing everytime tippy tappy from the back very rarely played it long
