Where’s the pride and self respect?

Sat Jun 28, 2025 8:32 am

Don’t get me wrong, I know the club will want some of the higher earners off the payroll but seeing the rumours of players like Robertson maybe angling for a move to Pompey amazes me.

Where’s the sense of pride? You players got us into this mess, it’s up to you to get us out of it. Is no one holding their hands up and saying fair play, it was our fault, let’s put it right. We’ll take a year of reduce wages and playing at a low level to get the club out of it.

In my mind it’s the least they can do. Surely we have some players who want to stand up and be counted?

If we haven’t we’re in a worse situation than I can imagine

Totally agree

Like stray cats they will go whoever feeds them the most. Irrelevant of club that's the bottom line. It's a job to them

Is there no pride in the job any more?

Footballers are just freelances out there to make the most money to suit them. That's been the case for decades now. If we're honest most of us would do the same. What angers me though is players who dont give their all whilst employed or fake loyalty to the club. They release social media that they care and then ask for a transfer. Quite a few City players have done that this summer. That's disrespectful.

Well said mate. Unfortunately I don’t think any player thinks the same way as us.
The only thing I would say (and I’m happy to be corrected)). Imagine if we were high flyers in a company and doing very well financially. Suddenly, the company has a bad year and everyone has to take a drop in wages. We get offered a similar position elsewhere on our previous wages. Would we go?

Brian clough springs to mind on this he was same thinking as me no need for all these graphs on paper they show players on the sidelines and overkill on tactics
clougie said see all these fans they have worked hard all week they have saved there money to come and watch you for entertainment, you are representing there hometown, there city, now go out there and play the game of your lives, and listen for the response you get from the fans and be a part of it be as one with them.
Sadly I cannot think of any manager apart from warnock old school who would say this ,oh and myself of course.

Good point, but they’re directly responsible.

And they were happy to sign that contract in the first place.

Would we go? I guess that depends on what type of person you are. And it worries me that we don’t have enough of the right type of person

I actually agree with you mate, just playing devils advocate. :bluescarf:
Perhaps we shouldn’t offer get out clauses in their contracts but that may have an effect on the type of player we could attract though it would certainly mean that they’d work their nuts off when playing for us.

No loyalty in footballers these days.....it's all about the money!

You’re right, but from a fans perspective.

As a Cardiff fan, we would do just that - take the hit on wages and try our best to get the club back into the championship or higher.

But that’s because the club is part of us. We’ve been there through thick or thin and it’s become part of who we are.

Players will see things completely differently. They have a short career and will try to earn as much as they can during that time, to set themselves and their families up for life after football.

Agents will also be pushing as they earn money when their clients move teams.

And just hope you don't get injured because then you're just "robbing the club" according to some.
