Alex Robertson will sit down with Brian Barry-Murphy either next week or this weekend to discuss his future
Alex Robertson’s Cardiff City future is set to be resolved as talk of a Pompey move resurfaces.
The News understands the League One title winner is due to have discussions with new Bluebirds boss Brian Barry-Murphy about his future, following the club’s relegation to League One.
And that could well pave the way for an exit from the side he joined last summer, with a stack of Championship clubs on the trail of the Blues title winner.
It’s believed a Fratton return is a prospect which appeals to Robertson, if his time in Wales does come to an end in the weeks ahead.
As many as dozen second-tier clubs are keen on the former Manchester City ace, including an option among the three sides relegated from the Premier League last season.
Outfits from across Europe and the MLS are also on the trail of the gifted operator, who made such a big impression helping the Blues to the title while on loan at Fratton Park in the 2023-24 campaign.
But Robertson would be drawn to the prospect of working with John Mousinho once again, and playing for a club he developed an affinity for in his time at PO4.
Pompey will be across developments, with it not yet clear of how any Cardiff exit would look and both loan and permanent departures considerations.
Robertson still has three years to run on the Cardiff deal he signed last August, after opting for a move to a side he anticipated would help him push towards ambitions of playing in the Premier League.
Robertson remains respectful of his position at Cardiff, who returned for pre-season training on Monday and head to Murcia for a warm-weather camp next month - playing two games at the same Pinatar Arena Pompey used in 2022 under Danny Cowley.
The likelihood, however, things are set to develop heading into next week over the pathway for the classy talent, who made 27 eye-catching appearances in his time at Fratton Park.

I’ve a feeling we won’t be able to offer him what he wants. Hope he stays though.

My only hope is that his previous relationship with BBM convinces him to stay.
He is a quality player. Probably didn't perform at his best last season most of the time, but can say the same about nearly everyone else.

This is the problem with relegation. The players have a few more days of championship wages, and then it's L1 reductions. We are no longer a decent championship club, so decent championship clubs can come in and take our players, but they are going to have to pay decent championship transfers.
What's he worth to another club, £4~£5 million? We don't want him to go.
Fri Jun 27, 2025 7:36 pm
He was one of our better players last season the players didn't perform for riza let's be honest some are quality players if played right but not with riza that was the problem why we got relegated I hope he stays he's quality
Fri Jun 27, 2025 7:37 pm
Sounds to me as if he wants away, his best mate has just signed for pompey, they were on holiday together a few weeks ago expect this one to go through
Shame as he could be huge for us this season but we only want players who want to be here I just hope we get a good price for him
Fri Jun 27, 2025 7:41 pm
Man City have, a, sell on clause. So I'd say £7/8 million
Fri Jun 27, 2025 7:43 pm
I’d like him to stay, he has previously been very good at this level, and we should be building a team with Robertson being included as part of the spine.
The reality is though, that he knows Pompey, and they are a division above us. If he doesn’t want to be here, it’ll be disappointing but understandable.
Fri Jun 27, 2025 8:09 pm
As I’ve said elsewhere I think people are going to be a bit surprised as to how many players actually end up leaving, no matter what the club has put out.
Fri Jun 27, 2025 8:20 pm
I really like him and see him as a key player going forward. He was also one of the few better performers..... BUT he didnt exactly pull up trees in the Championship.
He should stay, grow, and repay some loyalty.
Fri Jun 27, 2025 8:23 pm
They've wanted him for 12 months, let them pay a premium of £10 million. But the Echo says a potential loan which is madness.
Fri Jun 27, 2025 8:40 pm
Hopefully he will stay. But I was rather underwhelmed with him last season. Maybe this is his level to really stand out and make a better fist of it in the champ from his experiences this season.
If he goes, won’t be missed by me.
Fri Jun 27, 2025 8:51 pm
I don' t think murphy is bothered either way youngsters are where he feels comfortable it will be are you in or out imo and he can then move on .
I am sure he will ask him to stay but won' t loose any sleep if he goes .
What i want to know is who we are bringing in, that will tell me our ambition.
breaking up last years squad tells me nothing its obvious with some players where they are going
Who are we bringing in ?
Fri Jun 27, 2025 8:57 pm
sounds like we're going to find out if BBM's statement that players will only go on our terms is about to get an early test. under contract for another 3 years and if all these teams are interested we should be looking to get £5m in my opinion.
Fri Jun 27, 2025 9:54 pm
I’ll be massively disappointed, if he goes but hopefully he will stay, along with Salech
We really need both next season
Fri Jun 27, 2025 10:15 pm
Was he really that good last year, I can’t see it sorry. He had the odd good game but for some reason he is like the messiah. Bizarre.
Probably great for league one.
Fri Jun 27, 2025 11:03 pm
It would be a shame if he left coz I think he could be a really good player. He's got great feet and is so good in possession of the ball.
Still a bit raw though and doubt his stats were that great last season based on goals scored, assists, key passes and all that. He also didnt strike me as a player who always gave 100% either.
I'd like him to stay coz maybe BBM could bring out the best in him. If he feels that league 1 and CCFC are already beneath him though...its gotta be cheerio and cough up which ever club wants him.

That’s my point. He was ‘
Player of the Year’ in League One

I could be wrong but I'm not sure they got on that well, I remember him saying along the lines of he was sick of me by the end or something like that, so maybe the talk is to say it's different now i'm the boss?
Either way we will have to trust BBM to get these decisions right and keep who he thinks will fit, and let some go.

Completely disappeared after new year when we needed him most, almost like he wasn’t here….cash in and move on.
Don’t you just love the way these underperforming players who let us down so badly just decide they want to jump ship?
Sat Jun 28, 2025 8:10 am
Was BBM there when he was first sent out on loan to Pompey ,perhaps he could see flaws in his game or character that he didn’t like that’s why he was on his back at Man City .I was initially impressed with Robertson but don’t think he’s irreplaceable and surely BBM has a youngster in mind who could take his place if he doesn’t want to stay

Good post, there will be another 4-5 who wont fancy div 1 either. The way most of these losers performed last season they'd be sacked in any other industry but instead they will be telling their agents to find them a club in the championship.
Sat Jun 28, 2025 8:34 am
If he wants to go then let him , any players that don't want to be here get them off the wage bill , we are a massive club in league one and can pull in the best players for the league.
Sat Jun 28, 2025 9:49 am
I thought he was disappointing last year. Light weight and set pieces were absolutely shocking. Like previously stated this league maybe his level.
Sat Jun 28, 2025 10:12 am
He's an Ok player, but like most of the others were on a loosing team. There is no point in him staying if he does not want to be here! As he will never play his best.
Sat Jun 28, 2025 10:18 am
Lets be honest, I can't see Pompey stumping up £4 million, even £3 million as I think there are just as many questions as answers in the championship.
There is a big difference between a confident front-foot team in L1 and struggling in the championship. The step up is very big, not as great as the championship to premier, but substantial.
Sat Jun 28, 2025 2:25 pm
If he does decide that he wants to go, then I hope we play hard ball with any potential buyers and get a good price for him, as don't forget Man City put in a sell on clause, not sure how much it is, but we don't want to be only making £500000 profit on our purchase. And after he had that hamstring injury, when he missed quite a few games he was nothing like the player he was at the start of the season. His dead ball kicks were bloody useless couldn't clear the first defender most of the time. Having said that I think that working with BBM again could bring the best out of him again, so I do hope he stays.
Sat Jun 28, 2025 4:15 pm
Can’t see him going anywhere unless someone tables an offer of at least £5 million.
