League 1 sides raising their game against us

Fri Jun 20, 2025 9:34 am

He’s the third manager in a row where we have gone - who? Better google him! And we are in league 1 because of those last two dreadful sorry excuses for managers. Plus 3 of them in one season couldn’t get a tune out of that squad. And it’s all Tans decision making.

I fear a mediocre underwhelming season. I think sides will be raising their games against us as will their supporters. We are so fractured as a club , divided and rotting from the inside out, a dirge of football on the pitch last few years. Are we going to be up for this? A manager who is good with youth, a bit of attractive football? Not sure that’s what we needed tbh.

Right behind him from the first pre season game. But I’m worried. We deserved to be bottom last season. We were the worst team in the division. The mindset is that of defeat, lethargic almost effortless performance, it is going to take more than a pre season to change that mentality, into a winning one that can take up to 12 months or more , will we or Tan afford him that time? And yet again it means another manager learning on the job, that’s why i wouldn’t have appointed him despite his stint at the mighty Rochdale.

Soz for cautious words, but had a bad feeling about the last two very early on, and now this guy.

Please prove me wrong BBM and good luck!

Have you heard of the following?

Sipke Hulshoff
Fabian Otte
Aaron Briggs
Ruben Peeters

I'm presuming the answer is a no. Well they are the team behind Slot, at Liverpool, who ran away with the PL title this season.

This whole 'We've never heard of him' thing is a poor excuse for people to continue having a pop at the club, in my opinion.

If, after 10-15 games we are in the bottom half, then sure. But the guy hasn't even had a chance to wipe his arse before people start being negative.

If you play for Stevenage and you rock up at the Cardiff City Stadium and don’t feel excited , you’re not a professional footballer.
I don’t buy into the everyone raises their game. You should be there anyway. I doubt many teams are like us and pick off a spreadsheet missing courage, determination & guts as definable metrics
I don’t really watch European club football so I have never heard of any Slot, Ange or Amorim but i work in a factory so why should I?
Of all the coaches we were associated with I had only heard of Nathan Jones because he has been around the championship but we know he is a city fan and Rambo is a player. He is not even a coach.
I am not a coach spotter, I bet if I read through the other 23 coaches in our league, I have never heard of them either

Exactly - but people will use it as an excuse. As we have seen.

Correct, you presumed well, clever you, nope never heard of them.

Bottom of the league in our anniversary year, third tier football with a divided fanbase and your commenting on people taking a pop at the club as if its wrong to do so, I mean what do you expect? Not that I was actually doing that, and your taking pot shots yet again at fans who you disagree with you. Its a forum for fans to voice up, debate is healthy.

As I said I am unsure of his appointment and gave my reasons why, yet I will welcome him and be rooting and bouncing for him from the off in pre season and hopes he proves to be a diamond. We deserve that. Not being negative you are, and thats fine, you cant blame fans for being negative, look where we are, and the managers you swore by put us here. Thats my point, some of us would have preffered a manager with more experience of the division, and preferably however unrealistic with know how and knowledge of this league and how to have a promotion season or get into the play offs. You obviously wanted to stick with Tans winning formula of lesser known managers with minimal experience of the EFL, and thats your thing.

And yes I do believe however much of a pro baller you are or season ticket holder, smaller teams find that bit extra on and off the pitch for the bigger teams the FA Cup proves that, we are a big team to a lot of those teams.

I think they are reasonable comments by the OP, most fans wouldn't have heard of BBM. He said in his press conference that he gets a lot of "Brian Barry-Murphy who" comments and he likes that because he can work under the radar - that will change now.

He is well known in Ireland because his dad is a very famous sportsman there.

I think it's obvious he's not the same manager that he was at Rochdale. Acknowledged he made mistakes there, something he's learned from.

I also don't think Bulut was that bad. The style wasn't great but the first season was OK up until the last few games. Obviously fell off a cliff at the start of last season but the club didn't help him with the uncertainty about his contract.

Been clear I'm impressed with the manager's words.

But starting on Monday, his real work begins. Results are what he will be judged on and that's all that matters.

He's the boss now and we've all got to support him - as you've said you will :thumbright:

The one thing people keep mentioning is his work with youngsters, we have good ones coming through plus the ever divisive Rubin, who has another season ahead of him to prove he is not an enigma, and seen younger City players leapfrog him into Bellamys plans. So lets hope BBM has something about him not just to stop the rot, the ever revolving managers door but get something out of Colwill as I suspect his younger brother will leapfrog him also, and soon.

We need to stop this manager merry go round which leaves us with inconsistency on and off the pitch and a disjointed squad of players. I have been vociferous in Tan out, for 13 years, ultimately its solely his fault we are in the third tier, with what I believe is a poor squad but with good youngsters. I just hope for once he has made a decent appointment, and lets give BBM a big welcome, as uncertain and cautious as I am!

A good few points the Op has made I don't agree with it all but understand some people's trepidation and it is about opinions and he is entitled to his. Ge stated he will support him so let's see what happens.

Hi, I am a Pompey supporter and this thread interested me. Some say there is substance in teams raising their game at The Cardiff City Stadium, while others say they won't. As a Pompey fan I watched my team in both League One and Two and, in my opinion, teams definitely raise their games against more famous clubs with well known stadiums. Cardiff will be a big club in League One with a decent sized crowd that will create a good atmosphere. Clubs that normally play in small stadiums with small crowds will be lifted by playing in front of a big noisy crowd and will see the fixture against you as a 'special' day out, as will their supporters. We had that down here, more so in League 2, where some teams actually froze on the day or they played out of their skins. Their supporters see it as a special day out and will bring larger numbers than they would normally do. I know Cardiff have spent time at this level before so older supporters will remember how it was. But now with your nice new(ish) ground I am sure it will be more noticeable.

Anyway good luck to you and your club this coming season. I have spent time in Cardiff when my son was at university there and I always enjoyed my stay there.
